Attending a wedding in Uppsala in August, but have a day or two to see Stockholm. Staying in Uppsala and limited to trains/taxis. What are the best things/must sees in Stockholm (I think we have Uppsala covered with local knowledge). We have a 9 year old and 13 year old. Museums, shopping eating, site-seeing - all options/tips/suggestions most welcome!

There is a fantastic open air museum called Skansen. www.skansen.se/
A museum for children based on Swedish children's books including Moomins and Pippi Longstocking. www.junibacken.se/
Gamla Stan (the old town) is nice to wander round.
You can also take a boat trip to one of the smaller islands.
Public transport is brilliant.
Enjoy,we loved it.

Im going to Stockholm on Sunday and wondering what clothes to take. I assume it is not as warm as London at the moment.

The Vasa Museum is incredible. Abba Museum is fun but expensive. They are both in the same area.
Changing of the Guard was fun. Gamla Stan, Nobel Museum , City Hall?
We loved Stockholm.

With a 9 and 13 year old you definitely want to go to Djurgården when in Stockholm. It's the island where Skansen and Junibacken (mentioned upthread) are located. I might possibly avoid Junibacken if you only have a day and your kids are older / not familiar with Swedish children's literature as it might be a little young for them. Skansen is amazing tho, and Djurgården is also home to the Vasa ship museum (huge, ancient shipwreck) and the theme park Gröna Lund, the superfun Abba museum, plus loads more museums and attractions. From Stockholm's central station it's a nice 40 min walk over to Djurgården, through the shopping streets and then along the beautiful waterfront. You can also get a hop on hop off bus over I believe. You could walk back to the station through Gamla Stan (the old town) which is quaint and beautiful with loads of souvenir shops. Uppsala is wonderful btw, do let us know if you need any further tips for there too!

PS Bruffin, it's likely to be appx 20 degrees with sun, but prepare also for light rain and breeze!

Eek -sounds amazing! The Abba Museum is a must, and girls love Pippi and Moomin . I want to see the Vasa Museum and I guess evening at the theme park is all that doable in a day? Is the Stolkholm pass thing wrth doing as we could manage a boat tour on the second day...We are all really excited now!

Definitely the Vasa, it's fantastic. Takes a couple of hours but you might have to queue to get in for a while. DDs loved the theme park which is close to the Vasa, to get to both take a ferry from the centre of town. I would recommend Stockholm Cards, I think they include public transport ( which is excellent) as well as admission to attractions. We find if we have this sort of card you see more, you can nip into something for a short look where you would not get the value of the full admission cost. Sometimes it speeds up admissions as well if you don't have to queue to buy tickets.
We did not enjoy Skansen, all the buildings seemed to be closed on the day we were there and it was boiling hot so climbing the hill was a chore and the animals were comatose in the heat. Personally I would give it a miss if you only have two days. It is nowhere near as interesting as Beamish, as a living museum.
The changing of the guard is good, as is the royal palace. We really enjoyed Stockholm.

Thanks
Packing now😁

It might sound daft to go Stockholm and leave it, but the archipelago is lovely and some of the islands are pretty close.
Djurgarden is a beautiful part of the city, you can get a ferry across there and it's like a big park with museums, art galleries and some houses for what must be very wealthy people. You can hire bikes there too.
I enjoyed wandering around Sodermalm for a change too, across from Gamla Stan. I came across some of the most wonderful allotments there. Don't stick to the main road, it's dull, wander off, some great views back across the city.

Just got back and had a lovely time.
We bought the city pass for 3 days and made full use of it.
First day boat over to Drottningham Palace and also did the Theatre tour, but didnt go in the palace. Boat takes an hour and you need to get ticket even with the pass as it fills up and also the theatre tour is limited so need to book when you get there.
Next day we spent in Skansen the open air museum and zoo. We had plans to do more but never got round to it as we enjoyed Skansen so much.
Day 3back to the same island and did the Nordisk museum, Vasa and then boat over to the Fotografis (sp)gallery where we stayed for dinner and walked back.
Last day just wandered round .
We plan to go back and the Archpelligo and Abba museum are on our list .
It is very expensive to eat out. A meal for 4 and 2 desserts with a bottle of wine was £140 which was meatballs so nothing too fancy but it was in the old town. 2 ciders , glass of wine and a beer was £35 . Burgers and chips around £17 to £20.

getoffthesofa · 14/07/2017 08:22

Glad you had a great time - and very grateful for the reccy and report!.

But £140 for a meal Shock (which knowing my two they will only pick at). Think it will have to be sandwiches made from the breakfast buffet for us!!

That was the most expensive , they did do childrens menu which would be ok for the 9 yesr old.
We liked the little restaurant in Skansen by the glassblowers. That was quite good value and food was good.
We had big breakfast at hotel then just a cake and drink for lunch and the meal in evening.

bruffin · 14/07/2017 11:19

A word of warning a few places we visited are card only and dont take cash at all, so not worth changing up too much money.

getoffthesofa · 14/07/2017 11:31

Yes - we had been warned about that. Isn't the whole country aiming to cashless?
