AirBNB is banned in Manhattan. If you book in one of the boroughs like Brooklyn then it's OK.

Hassled · 02/07/2017 18:02

It's a bit iffy in NYC because it's technically against city laws - relevant article. That said, we did it a couple of years ago and aside from being told by the apartment host to tell the janitor of the block we'd be there for 2 month, had no problems at all.

BigGreenOlives · 02/07/2017 18:07

Friends of mine rented somewhere in Manhattan in the Spring & were really disappointed - grotty & noisy. They could have stayed in a reasonable hotel for the same money, although they had a kitchen they didn't actually use it (2 couples).

Co1onelblimp · 02/07/2017 18:10

Don't do it. It's not allowed in NYC. Considered the same as subletting.

RaspberryBeretHoopla · 02/07/2017 18:12

Have some friends who had s decent place but clearly were unwanted by the neighbours. Another had a bad time as the place was a dump.

We've only had good experiences elsewhere but I read every review and only book places with lots of reviews.

MozzchopsThirty · 02/07/2017 18:24

It is allowed as long as you are renting a room not an entire apartment which is classed as subletting and is illegal.

We've booked an airbnb in Brooklyn. It's a private room in an apartment
The hotel rooms were in excess of £150 per night even for a shit hole
This place cost £60 per night and has great reviews
Can't wait

Kinderbonbon · 02/07/2017 18:27

Yak...I had a feeling it was against the law but I have some friends who are going there using a Airbnb. I'm going to check the article.

There are reports of scams around it in Manhattan because you can't really go to the police if you get ripped off doing something illegal. So you'd be taking a risk.

Noteventhebestdrummer · 02/07/2017 18:40

We did flipkey, it was fine and a good price.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 02/07/2017 20:45

No re Airbnb in NYC; short term rentals of 30 days or less in the five boroughs is illegal due to the accommodation being illegally sublet under the terms of their rental agreement. Other problems include other apartment residents complaining to their Super about the transients in their building. There are also many scams and NYC apartments can be very small in size.

Stay in a hotel instead.

I'm going to an AirBnB very soon - it's in Brooklyn - 3 bedroomed apartment in a brownstone. My sister stayed there a couple of years ago and highly recommended it.

I can PM you a link if you like.

Kinderbonbon · 02/07/2017 21:01

Please imperial, could you ?

You really want to be in the heart of nyc, Manhattan not out in the suburbs, seriously!

We did an Airbnb in NYC last year. First time I'd used it and it was awful. The 'host' had made her studio apartment look fab but in reality it was grotty. Her cleanliness was not at all like mine (I use the Hoover) and there was a dead cockroach in the external hallway.

No lift either and it was the third floor, so lugging our huge cases (last stop of 5 around USA & Canada!) up and down was not fun!

We'd both been to NYC before so wasn't worried about a nice hotel so
I'd gone Airbnb as it was recommended by a friend. Reading on here about it being illegal makes sense now as the host told us to tell any neighbours we see that we were her friends.

Just very glad we'd had nice hotels on the rest of our trip!

ImperialBlether · 03/07/2017 12:05

I was going to NY anyway and found I could rent an AirBnB in Brooklyn with three bedrooms for the same price as a small hotel room in Manhattan.

It's hardly the suburbs - it's just across the Brooklyn Bridge!

MozzchopsThirty · 03/07/2017 12:34

And Brooklyn is amazing

The same laws that are in Manhatten also apply to Brooklyn. I would check out the Tripadvisor New York forum, a few New Yorkers post on there and know a lot more about the legalities.

Also Radio City Apartments is a a legal hotel with suites which have kitchenettes.

I've booked my flights to New York for next year, it's my first holiday and it's took me years to save for it - I'm trying to find a suitable affordable hotel too. I want to book something before the pound goes down even more.

ImperialBlether · 03/07/2017 21:05

I spoke to the woman in Brooklyn and she said it's her house and so she's able to let it out.

BubblesBuddy · 06/07/2017 23:12

Affordable in Manhattan is usually a bit grotty. NY is expensive and hotel rooms are small. I would trawl through the high rated establishments on booking.com and trip advisor and filter them by price. You might find something good for your budget.
