Where in Majorca should I stay?

I am looking to book a week in Majorca in August (I know I have left it late!). I have never been to Majorca. I can see from searching on MN that people recommend Puerto Pollensa. We are a family of 5 with one pre-teen and two teens. We usually holiday in Cornwall or travel around quite a lot preferring city-breaks with culture. None of us are good at sitting still.

I would like a villa with a pool, but I don't think I could spend a lot of time by the pool. I also like to be near a beach, but again I don't think I would spend all day on it. I would like to travel around a bit on the island and also spend a few days in Palma. I am wondering if Palma would be the best option for us as its more like our usual city-break.

Knowing how late I have left it, does anyone have any recommendation at least where on the island I should position us so we could get a bit of time relaxing poolside, but also visit lots of places?

I hope someone has the ideal place for us.

I find the region around port de soller the most appealing by far. Village called fornalux is beautiful and still easy to get about from.

I'd definitely aim for the pollensa and port of pollensa area. Huge amount of villas. You should find something even at this stage but will be expensive! Based there you can drive to the formentor peninsula for walking and beaches, the old town of pollensa for some culture and PP itself for restaurants and beach. The whole island is accessible from there.

Soller is a really nice town, we stayed a 5 minute walk so peaceful but easy to get to restaurants, teenagers could go grab ice creams or similar. Coast at Port Soller a short drive/Tram ride or longer walk away. Also easy to take the train to Palma for a day trip

The love for PP on here is a bit cult like. I don't really get it, it's OK but it's not like it's the only lovely place in Mallorca and it's quite expensive.

If you want to see a bit of Palma and also travel round the island, staying near to Palma works - you can always visit PP and Formentor for a day.

We stay in Paguera, which is about 20 minutes from Palma and once had a holiday where we had a day visiting Soller/Port Soller, a day in Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa, a day over on the east coast and then the rest of the time just staying locally.

Paguera has 3 lovely beaches and is a fairly small quiet resort with a nice atmosphere. Most other tourists are German, so there's lots of German spoken as well as Spanish - food is a Spanish/German mix.

I agree with Barbara, and I had such high expectations when I went there but I found it more resortlike, and nothing really distinguishing there. There is a lovely beach on far side in fir trees I think but I found it bland.

I also much prefer porto soller region. You have the huge dramatic mountains for a start, the bay of PS is gorgeous....soller is lovey as is the tram ( although v v pricey)

Thanks everyone. I have booked a place in Palma. That way we can travel around on the island, but be based in a town so we don't get bored. Looking forward to seein Majorca!!
