Would you take an almost 3 year old to a football match?

was thinking of taking a weekend break next year and notice that my husbands team (northern, league 2) are playing in a potential weekend break destination so might be a nice surprise to book tickets for that too whilst we are there (as a surprise for him!)

but will our son (who will be 1 month away from 3 at the time) be ok at a football match?! i have only ever been to one football match in my life so i can't really judge this properly!! he goes to a football class once a week currently and does enjoy watching a bit of football on the telly, so its not content, more atmosphere!

if you have done this with young children let me know your thoughts!

Thank you!

You'll be fine! It's actually really entertaining taking a three year old to the football. I first took my now 8yo when she was three and I have the following tips :

  1. Definitely sit in the family enclosure if they have one because they repeat EVERYTHING! Seriously , she didn't miss a beat, every shout or chant she just shouted it out straight away - hilarious if it's just players names or boo but if we'd sat anywhere else in the ground I'd have died! So if you're not in a separate family area choose your neighbours wisely! Luckily in lower leagues you can pretty much sit anywhere.
  2. Take a bag of tricks. My DD1 can now manage around an hour before I resort to it but at three she would only watch the game for about 15 minutes. I'd suggest colouring book and crayons, little cars /other small toys, maybe a magazine - does he like mags yet? DD2 is now 3 and won't really bother with magazines. Lining up for a sausage roll at half time and eating it will take up some time too.
Some kids might have longer attention spans than mine. I've only taken DD1 once or twice a season so far. Sounds like it will be worth you booking the trip though and you'll have fun at the match. Enjoy!
