Long haul in August... recommendations please!

We're in the rather fortunate position of planning a long-haul trip next summer.
We're a family of four (two young teen dds) and we like quite active holidays, with plenty of relaxing thrown in!
Our quandary is where to go that isn't rainy in August. We don't mind rainy season, so long as there are some spells of good sunny weather thrown in.

Criteria include:

Things to do (activities etc)
Approx mid twenties av. temperature
Scenery
Beaches (at least for part of it)
An element of wildlife / educational stuff

We plan to travel in the country of choice.

Any ideas welcomed... thank you!

We are doing Mauritius in October. Sea, national park, diving, museums, dolphins, islands, markets, lily pads. Apparently it's amazing! Went on honeymoon but didn't leave hotel. Now aiming to see it!

Yes if going to Bali avoid Kuta! For Indonesia...

Sanur is nice and handy for the airport. Head over to Lombok and stay on Gilli Meno or Gili Air. Head to Flores Island for Komodo dragons, or Java for Mount Bromo and Borobudur. Finish in a really nice spot in Ubud which is also not too far for an airport transfer.

Canada - Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island. Fly to Boston, have some time there - walk the Freedom Trail and then drive/boat to the islands. Easy drive up the coast, loads to see and do and lovely weather. You would need three weeks.

Love the idea of Nova Scotia, thanks x

We went to Indonesia last august - went to Java and Lombok and really loved it. I had teens too. There are lots of things to do including climbing volcanoes, beaches/diving and jungles. I think we had one night of really heavy rain, but otherwise the weather was good.

Peru is good in August. No beaches worth going to though as far as I can see. Definitely Northern California or Seattle and Alaska. Boston, Cape Cod and Vermont etc. but agree Usa is expensive at the moment. Yes to South Africa and Kenya would be fine. Madagascar too.

BubblesBuddy · 29/06/2017 20:03

Oh yes! Canada, Iceland and Greenland.

TealStar · 29/06/2017 20:35

Thanks guys. Canada would be ace but the climate puts me off; we don't do many beach holidays and I would like a bit of gentle heat and ideally some beautiful white sand (or at least just sandy!) beaches too.

This is all very useful. We've already done Kenya (loved it), in fact I've been to Africa three times already, which is why I'm focusing on other continents...

I like the idea of Massachusetts; cape Cod etc... is the climate reliable?

Anna, that sounds amazing... I assume you flew from place to place? Was getting around easy?

we flew between Java and Lombok (and back again) but otherwise we did trains or private cars to get around. Yes it was easy - the places we stayed were really helpful and sorted stuff out for us (we stayed in 3 star places - small lodges really).

I have young children too or I would have gone to more places - Borneo looks amazing I think.

Tropical part of Australia. Snorkelling/diving on reef, island hopping.

Madagascar is huge and interesting. I went there in July a few years ago and the weather was good. East coast was very wet, but it always is. Everywhere else was fine.

Could do a combination of Mauritius and Reunion. Reunion has loads of adventure stuff to do, but I have doubts about the August weather.

Kruger Park safari, Vic Falls, Mozambique beach combo.

Seychelles doesn't have to be expensive resorts. You can stay in guesthouses, particularly on Mahe and La Digue. Mahe has some ok hiking. There's not a huge amount to do other than the water based activities though.

Thanks all
