looking for mild heat late august

I'm drawing a complete blank on where to go for our august holiday (leaving it a bit late, I know). Either driving (10 hours or so max) or short cheap flight and a self -catering gites/villa. I just want somewhere to chill with my family (DS6 and DS8) have some nice food. Honestly, if we have a pool and the weather is right (20+) then we can just hang out in the pool and read and swim. We like hiking and last year stayed in a bit of Italy where there were lots of places to walk to and go wild swimming which we all loved. We live in London so getting away from loads of people is a big priority.

I'm currently looking at Languedoc and Provence but wonder if I've missed something closer.

We had a fab August holiday in Austria. Variable weather, always warm but never too scorching. Mountains, lakes etc

When our dc were younger we had wonderful.holidays in the French Alps. Not too hot, lovelyvwalks/hikes, and we stayed in ski apartments so very cheap.in summer. We stayed in a town called Saint Gervais which is quite close to Chamonix but far less crowded. There was a wonderful swimming lake, Lake Passy, nearby. Plus nice restaurants. It's also very close to the Not Blanc tunnel so we drove into Italy as well for walking at Courmayeur. We always drove but you could fly to Geneva and hire a car.

Our dc still say those holidays were their favourites.

For Germany what kind of holiday do you want? Otherwise it is like asking for town recommendation in the UK, you have so many different landscapes and things to do.

So, mountains, mid-mountain range, lakes, seaside (baltic and north sea)? Big towns with lots of museums and you can walk to restaurants in the evenings, small towns but easy access to attractions?

For germany (or anywhere for that matter) we are looking for a self catering holiday home with private pool. would be nice to have walking or easy cycling nearby. Not looking for a city break but would be nice to have some restaurants within striking distance so I dont spend the holiday in the kitchen. If we are driving, closer to Calais the better.

Thanks

North West Spain or The Azores.

In typical me fashion, it turn out we are going to the place i of course dismissed first. Southern Vendee. And it looks fabulous. Everything we need for a relaxing break. Thank you everyone for all of the good ideas. Will start plannign 2018 soon!

The Vendee is lovely.

I agree with Iamastonished that the Azores is really good weather wise as it's not too hot. We had a great holiday there a few years ago.
