I know this has been done before but..bottled water for formula?

Which one is safest to use? DS will be nearly 11 months old when flying. Its only for making bottles up on plane as can then buy the water airside and don't have to worry about limescaley water in the industrial kettles onboard etc....

Wanted to take cartons of ready formula but according to the Heathrow rules which I checked today, you have to taste it before take it on board which is mad as it has to be used within the hour once opened....WTF?!! Same with baby food as well!!!

Evian is the best water to use for making up formula if I remember rightly - its lower in sodium and other minerals

Kif · 19/03/2007 17:04

phone the boots 'airside'.

when I flew last week g'wick, they had cartons in stock. See how you wouldn't want to trust it....

bottled water no sterile, I thinkl, so not really suitable. Whether for 11mo it would make that much difference...

I'd personally take bottles with 100ml cooled water and individ sachets of formula powder.

Nikki76 · 19/03/2007 17:12

Haven't seen sachets of formula powder but have got the dispenser tubs where you measure out what's needed for the feed and store in there, so I guess that's ok but DS drinks 200ml at each feed, which is over the 100ml limit....am sure they allow babies to have more water than that??

According to what I've read, I'll have to taste the milk powder for security.....am tempted to sniff it up my nose and go phwor, yeah that's good stuff just to piss them right off!!

Funny that this was posted b/c I was just looking into this today. Basically, all medical advice says that you can use bottled water but that you still need to boil it and then if you need to you can put it back into the bottle for future use. So clearly this doesn't help with the airport "security" issues with highly 'dangerous' bottled water. The reason for needing to boil it btw is that although bottled water is free from impurities and disease it is still not sterile. I see you said your DS is 11 mths but the advice I've come across doesn't mention the age you can stop boiling water. I also read that Evian is the best bottled water when it comes to making up infant formula as it is the most easily digestable since the mineral levels are not too high. Personally, even tho this is the guide lines I've found pretty much everywhere I still can't see how Evian needs to be boiled but what would I know! And yes, it's so ridiculous that you can't take sealed ready made formula on board without testing it! Totally WTF... Apparently we are all "safer" this way

Kif · 19/03/2007 18:41

sma do them

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 19/03/2007 18:50

If it puts your mind at rest, French midwives recommend evian for formula even for newborns, although I have to say it was weird watching a friend open a bottle to make up her 6 week old's formula! I'm having the same panic about how to cope with flying, because dd is lactose intolerant, and nutramigen formula can't be made up in advance.

mears · 19/03/2007 18:54

At 11 months will you really need formula at all? I know it is 12 months officially but 11 months is pretty damned close. Would save a lot of hassle just to use cows milk.

Nikki76 · 19/03/2007 19:27

Yeah, it prob wouldn't do him any harm to give him cows milk but I'm too scared to do it!! Would have to start it now to get him used to it before the flight and even then, would still need formula on the way back as the milk in Syria can cause tummy upsets if you aren't used to it (it is pasteurised though) so couldn't give it to him on return flight....

Going to ring the airport and see what their stance is on boiled water for babies - am sure they allow more than 100ml as that on equates to roughly 4oz ffs!! These rules really piss me off! I wonder if they are so thorough with the big suitcases cos they are going on the plane as well. I bet they aren't!!! They will be making the b/feeding mums express and taste that as well in a minute the way they are taking this too far!!

hi Nikki,
if you look on baa.co.uk it tells you exceptions for the 100ml water, and this includes steralised water for babies

margoandjerry · 19/03/2007 19:30

If cows milk, which is not sterile, is roughly ok for babies of the age of your child, then non-boiled mineral water is certainly ok as long as it has low enough sodium.

Nikki76 · 19/03/2007 19:32

Oooh thanks Skirmish...must have missed that earlier....[blushes] rant over for the minute then!! Powdered formula and sterlised water it is then! Yayyy!! One worry down....!

no problems...i plan to take a couple of big bottles of steralised water, rather than fill each individual bottle, as you still may be expected to 'taste' the water, and bugger me if i'm going to do 8 times (at least - flying for over 24hrs!!!)

eidsvold · 20/03/2007 09:03

when we flew to Aus with dd1 ( 8 mo at the time) used the cartons - as there was no restrictions. Flying back - cartons not available in Aus so just bought two big bottles of Evian and made the formula up. She had no reactions etc - she was quite happy to drink it.

sparklygirl · 30/03/2007 20:40

You could always take cartons and then open them at security and then keep in the bottles in a cool bag with an ice pack. We did this going to Spain. I made DH taste the formula as there is no way I could taste it, it makes me heave.
