Weekend break with kids abroad

Where would people recommend to go away for a special weekend (or long weekend) with a 5 and 3 (will probably be 6 and 4 when we go) year old.
We can't afford a proper holiday abroad at the moment but would love to take them on an aeroplane and get them to experience a different culture.

Obviously don't want a really long flight and don't want to do Disney (eldest hates fair rides so would be a waste of money). Was thinking maybe Amsterdam but not sure how family friendly it would be.

I adore Jersey. I want to move there actually, I'm trying to find out how viable that is.

St Brelade's Bay is my absolute favourite place in the world. I think public transport is pretty good (I don't know as we hire a car), and there is so much to do.

I would have thought that a car would be a hinderance in any large city.

Most cities that have been mentioned have good, cheap public transport from the airport to the city centre. Eg. the Lisbon Metro has a line running from the airport to the city and it's really cheap, a lot quieter than the London Underground and easy to get around on.

As well as the main city attractions, the waterfront area is nice to walk along and as a PP mentioned, you can get to a proper beach by the sea within a short train journey.

Yay oogle love hearing about people who love it here. I'm biased obviously.

If you want somewhere just a bit outside of Europe which is hot good food and super interesting had you considered Jerusalem? I was there for work last May. For three days. Amazing city. Maybe avoid the summer months though as hot hot hot.

Paris, stay with my kids in an Airbnb apartment in the shadows of Notre Dame, in the Latin Quarter. Close by M&S foodhall, boulangerie Kayser Maison, Parc Luxembourg has a fantastic play area as well as small wooden boats on the pond. Also museum Louvre has late two night openings which feels so special. Finally, the water bus takes you to all the major sites. If you can face it, Disneyland & Versaille are good days out too but busy.

ememem I am extremely jealous that you live there. We enjoyed a weekend there recently and I could have cried when we got on the plane to go home. We'll be back next month and this time we'll have the child with us (such a great place to go for a child-free break!) and I can't wait.

I would give my right arm to move there. It's my happy place.

oogle when you bring dc make sure you check out Tamba Park. It's god dinosaurs outside, boating lake, fire jugglers (at the weekend only I think) indoor and outdoor play area..it's pretty good!

Possibly a stupid question but when flying to jersey I know that we don't need a passport and that photo ID is ok but what about the kids? Obviously they don't have photo ID would they need birth certificates instead?

No idea...never travelled here with a child. I'd check with the airline and maybe call the airport.

As far as I'm aware everyone I know here with kids uses a passport as a lot of people travel further afield via Paris (lower taxes - dh and I travelled to nz to see his family last year via Paris saved £600 on flights going this way - boat to France and train to Paris and reverse wasn't fun with stinking jet lag but....£600 saved!) and passports are needed to get to and from France.

Sorry, got distracted earlier but have now sent you a pm with details :)

You need photo ID for most carriers. Each airline or ferry will tell you what it expects.
