HELP! Chicken pox maybe!!!?

Hello!

We are on holiday and my one year old has come down with chicken pox. We are due to go home on tuesday, via air. What do I do?? I'm on my own with two kids, have school/work/nursery on Wednesday (assuming nursery won't take her even though that's where she's caught it!).

Does anyone know what the deal is when you are coming home? The website says you can fly 7 days after the last spot appeared but not what happens if you're already abroad!

Am having a bit of a panic!

I think you won't be able to fly, but contact airline to check. Have you got insurance?

Rachie1986 · 03/06/2017 21:31

Eeek. No advice but hoping you sort it and thinking of you. Take care zx

Weebittymarchpane · 03/06/2017 21:31

Do you have travel insurance? I don't think they will let you in the plane I'm afraid.

scaevola · 03/06/2017 21:33

Contact airline for policy on when they will carry someone post-pox.

Contact your insurers to get the means to fund your additional stay and new flights.

You'll probably need a doctor's note of some sort.

Birdsbeesandtrees · 03/06/2017 21:34

I don't think you can fly.

I guess you will have to contact your insurance company - hopefully you will be covered.

welshweasel · 03/06/2017 21:35

You can't fly til all the spots have crusted over. Your travel insurance will sort it. It's a common enough thing to happen. Usually you will have to see a doctor in resort to get it confirmed. They will then sort hotel and flights home once better. If you're the only adult you'll all get to stay, if you are with another adult they may expect them to fly home with the other children and you follow on in a week or so.

Exactly the same thing happened to us at Easter while in Dubai.

We had to get a Fit to Fly letter over there from a doctor (we actually had to get it done twice as the insurance were being difficult how it was worded!).

Insurance allowed us all to stay (me, DS2 who had the pox, DS1 who was 12 and DH). We were supposed to be coming home with Emirates but they wanted to wait 7 days after the last spot had scabbed...yes you read that right! He got it the Saturday and had scabbed over by the following friday however Emirates refused to take him for another 7 days.

Insurance got us home with another airline in the end on the Sunday so we ended up with 3 extra days holiday!

Whereabouts are you?

Spottyparrot99 · 03/06/2017 22:07

Same thing happened to us in st. Lucia. Day got chicken pox 4 days before due to leave. Had to get dr out to confirm it for insurance then get her out again for a fit to fly note before going home. Insurance would only pay for one adult to stay out with him so me and dd went home alone and Dh and ds stayed out for few more days. However, hotel made them stay quarentined in room! Think they were bit freaked out as everyone gets vaccinated over there, apparently! Insurance paid for extra days, dr, room service etc. Sp x

Thanks all!
She's woken up this morning and there aren't anymore spots, so I don't think it's the pox! Sorry to hear of everyone else's troubles. Fingers crossed we will be ok! X

Please do not be selfish and fly if there is any chance she is contagious. Somebody with low immunity could be on that plane and would catch it.

youarenotkiddingme · 04/06/2017 06:39

Does she still have a few spots - the original ones?

Not everyone is 'covered'.

You don't want to get to Tuesday and be refused to get in the plane.

frizzfactor · 04/06/2017 10:09

No the spots have pretty much disappeared over night. I would never put anyone else at risk so am being very careful. My eldest wasn't covered so I should be able to discern. (Also staying with friends who are parents, we are all satisfied!) x

all of my kids (and me) get a spotty rash whenever they get any sort of infection - cold, tummy bug etc. it usually only last about 24/36 hours then goes and with the eldest I was forever thinking it was chicken pox because it does look similar. perhaps your child is like this?

frizzfactor · 04/06/2017 12:21

Hello, yes she gets a rash every time she has something, it's very annoying but this is different, and not on her trunk, just her limbs and face x

That looks like a very light case of chicken pox such as my son had. Generally, if it's a non poxy rash that appears as part of any other infection then it disappears completely within 48hrs. Even with a light case of chicken pox, the spots will stay for at least a week, so you'll know soon enough if they are still there tomorrow.

twocockers · 04/06/2017 15:20

Look like chicken pox to me too.

Hoppinggreen · 04/06/2017 19:31

From the photo that really does look like Chicken pox, sorry
They dont have to have many - DD had about 3 ( as did I according to my mum) but DS was covered in them
