Howth

You don't have to go on the dart for this as there are pick up points in the city but I would still reccomend a trip on the dart!

Platform 6 at Connelly Station, it brings you along the coast, so you can hop on and off, for example, Killiney (Bonos patch) Dun Laoighre oh and if you stay till the last stop there is a beautiful seaside village called Greystones.

Mhamai · 19/03/2007 12:33

I know, that's the problem when you don't have a lot of time, well I think I'll leave you with those links for now but if you want me to link anything else, just ask! Oh you'll have a great time, I'm sure!

Try the Winding Stair Bookshop on Lower Ormond Quay (opposite side of the Liffey to Temple Bar). Three floors of books and a cafe that sells healthy and vegge food. (Completely unlike the Borders/ Starbucks combo, iyswim.)

filthymindedvixen · 19/03/2007 16:25

12yeargap - that sounds perfect, thanks

Cafe Topolis on Parlament St, is great, good prices for 2 course lunches and early dinners}

Skribble · 19/03/2007 22:06

Sorry Parliament St, and Ok its not very Irish

hermykne · 19/03/2007 22:10

the winding stair restaurant is now separate entity to the shop. and not cheap. its quite formal.
here

Not an expert on Dublin at all, but was there a couple of weeks ago. The new (probably not that new, but new since I was last there, which was 10 years ago!) tram is fab!

If you like 'old stuff', the Book of Kells is wonderful.

hermykne · 19/03/2007 22:19

ellbell - the luas!

sunnydelight · 19/03/2007 22:21

Fitzers on Dawson Street is a lovely place to eat - Fitzers has been around for years in various incarnations and has always done great food but it's certainly gone more upmarket as time's gone by! Have a wander through Trinity College - there used to be a great pub called the Lincoln Inn as you go out through the back gates, not sure if it's still there though.

Ellbell · 19/03/2007 22:28

Was working (supposedly) and didn't have much time off, but zipped down to St Stephen's Green in next to no time and had a little wander down Grafton Street. Aaaah!

[Makes mental note not to wait another 10 years.]

twelveyeargap · 20/03/2007 07:28

hermykne - I think I've just been shown up as an ex-pat!

filthymindedvixen · 20/03/2007 17:45

oh I'm quite gutted, sounded like my fantasy bookshop

sunnydelight, i went into fitzers about 6 wks ago and walked out. empty restaurant nad they were seating us at the back. changed table got the menu and it was outrageously overpriced for the food. 17 euros for a plate of spagetti with garlic and parmesan.

the georgina campbell website is really good that i linked too, she is an esteemed tourist industry critic and fair, she covers all price brackets.

steps of rome of grafton st, on chatham st, is excellant value for fabulous pizza / melanze (sp!) and coofee and a quick stop.

boxty house in temple bar sounds like your place FMV, traditional but not twee.

god if i remember there are some good pub grub places too. not overpriced restaurants with staff that dont care!!

filthymindedvixen · 23/05/2007 19:42

ok, bumping this as I'm off on tuesday. I have done a search but a lot of the 'what to do in Dub' threads are old...

So, must-see/do places? for me and DH (no kids woo-hoo)
We are quite skint though, so please don't recommend any expensive places...

friendlyedjit · 23/05/2007 19:53

"the international"- wicklow street- near to trinity college and grafton street- proper pub with stools and good beer- gigs upstairs!
I'm soooo jealous

oh and "the Brazen Head"
"kehoes" south anne street- but probably not same since old man Kehoe gone

guess what i used to do a lot of!!
have a fab time

filthymindedvixen · 23/05/2007 20:00

well friendlyedgit (love your name BTW), we're out of practise but I assume sitting in a good pub getting slowly wankered while talking bollocks and listening to a spot of music is like riding a bike...

filthymindedvixen · 23/05/2007 20:00

oh, and shoopping? Dh has just promised me a (modest) fist full of Euros to choose a birthday pressie for myself, so where are nice shops?

OP posts:
yogimum · 23/05/2007 20:56

We did the kilmainham jail tour, absolutely fascinating and a good insight to an important part of irish history.

yogimum · 23/05/2007 20:58

grafton st for shopping, Brown Thomas the department store is fab.

friendlyedjit · 25/05/2007 21:00

shopping............ now depends on what you want. I go back a few times a year and usually take an empty suitcase, as buy gals lots of clothes there, as tend to go for sales- Think you will miss them sorry but sterling okish at moment.
I go to Dunnes stores for kids clothes and DH likes their jeans etc. They are supplied I am imformed by same supplier to the gap for jeans and quality fab
there are lots of lovely shops on Grafton street and off lying streets, good shopping centre of henry street and at top of grafton street.
I'd head off on the Dart to Bray and go to the porterhouse for luch- nice food and nice to walk by the sea. Dun Laoghaire is also on same Dart line and ghas got a bit trendy! bit south bankish- Or alternatively Dalkey- another great place to have a drink and meal- the queens- head down the Vico raod- as view fab- and see the amazing houses also- lots bought up by the "rich and famous" !!!
oh and do have a wee glass of guinness for me and say hi to the sea- as am having withdrawl!

filthymindedvixen · 27/05/2007 10:22

ok, so last ditch bump for this - thanks to all who have responded fpor your fab ideas, BUT the weather forecast is for pissing down in buckets all week so...indoory stuff??

OP posts:
friendlyedjit · 27/05/2007 14:09

noooooooo- do the dart and the walking, meals and shopping etc. Don't let a bit of soft rain dampen your spirits ( she hopes no gails and heavy winds though!)Bring the waterproofs!
