Capetown

Can anyone recommend a good day safari from Capetown? We will be there in August for 8 days.

We have lots of other things planned- City tour, Robben Island, Table mountain, Boulders Beach, whale watching, so can't commit to more than a day (or one night) for the safari.

We will have a hire car.

I really don't think there is anywhere near Cape Town for a safari. If you want a day trip you could do the a trip out to the winelands or you could manage the Cederberg where you have great rock formations and also hiking and biking. Or in August you could find somewhere on the West coast to see the spring flowers.

It would be a real shame to go to South Africa and not do a proper safari, are you going further along the Cape at all? If not could you change your trip to do fewer days in Cape town?

Hi you could go to Aquila game reserve it's about a hour outside of Cape Town.

There is also Inverdoorn quite close to CT.

Aquila game reserve is the Disney version of Game Reserves and not worth bothering with. You should either do a proper safari of just not do one at all.

Randomly- That was such a great link. We like the look of staying over at Buffelfontein. It is only an hour's drive, has great reviews and very reasonable.

We are now looking at Table Mountain. We are a family of 4 (DC 15/16) and would like to walk up and cable car down. Which is the best way to do this? Where do we park? Are some routes better or easier than others?

We parked up at Kirstenbosch and walked (scrambled) up Skeleton Gorge and came back down Nursery Gorge. I think if you planned it you could go up either of those routes, walk across the top, cable car down and taxi back to Kirstenbosch (or vice versa). Or take taxi to start point and taxi home from end point.

We did Skeleton Gorge with a 10 yr old and a 17 year old, it was good fun and not overly challenging. Take plenty of water with you and a decent map.

Plattekip is the route up from the cable car side.

We did the hike in July, weather was good (hot at the top!) but if you are planning to do it on the winter season you do need to watch the weather and plan accordingly.
