Where to go in the USA for a long weekend

Looking for a long weekend in the US. Direct flights preferred. My travel companion has never been so is very keen on the US but it's never been a place that has inspired me as my ideal holidays usually involve old architecture, good food, Rome for example. Happy to try the US though just not really got a lot of knowledge on its cities and tourist attractions. Not New York or Disney as have done those.

Please can you give me recommendations and tell me why you like the destination?

Maine. Because it's amazing.

If you've only got a long weekend I'd stick with East coast. Boston, Washington DC or (not quite US) Toronto??

Chicago - has great food and interesting architecture. Lots of options to fly direct (in the summer - don't go in winter anyway as it's too cold).

Philadelphia, Chicago or Boston.All have plenty of historical sites and great places to eat.

I would suggest Boston or Philadelphia.

Boston or Washington. Lots to see in both

New Orleans is fab but only BA currently fly there direct from the UK and it's a 10 hour flight. Chicago and Boston are great. Or how about Las Vegas? Bonkers but fun.

New Orleans is too far for a short trip.

I have small children. Sitting on a plane watching films is pretty much a holiday in itself so not too bothered about flight length .

St John's in Newfoundland & Labrador. Not America, but an amazing place, and well worth a weekend visit. Jealous.

Boston is lovely. The flight is only 6 hours.

Cape cod, Boston, New Orleans, Maine, Washington DC, Chicago.

Actually forget Maine. Everyone and his dog arrived yesterday and I'm sick of it already!

If you like history and seafood I'd go to Boston

Architecture and music then go to Chicago

Museums and public architecture then Washington DC

Washington or Chicago. Visited both, loads to do/see and very walkable.

Thank you all. We did some research and am thinking Boston in October maybe. Although my friend has thrown miami for some sun in the mix

Hotels are more expensive than I thought though.

Hehe, I once went to Orlando for a long weekend!
Boston in October is going to be prime leaf-peeping season and it makes an already pricy place even more so.
I'd be thinking more Washington/Delaware myself...

My friend said Orlando but I said I wouldn't do Disney without my kids as felt wrong.

Savannah GA or Charleston SC. Beautiful Southern architecture, lovely gardens, lots of history, wonderful food! Both are coastal cities with lots of lovely water views and both have many tours available.

Each one also has lovely old cemeteries, but if that is something that interests you (I love them), I'd probably choose Savannah.
