Are Mexico/Dominican Repulic cheap because they are tacksville? Have heard mixed reports.

Also.
What are the maldives like? Part of me thinks ooh luxury and part of me thinks it might be a tad boring...
What are all inclusive 'sandals' type resorts like? Are they nice or a bit of a nothing?

Finally any honeymoon ideas for mid October - not actually too bothered about hot weather but do quite fancy those all inclusivey places. Want luxury for about £3000 for 7-10 days.

If I was going to go to the Caribbean on holiday I would book flights and find my own accomodation via the internet. Yes the Dom Rep and Mexico resorts are supposed to be horrible. also don't forget that there is malaria in DR. Go to St Lucia or Tobago, gorgeous islands with lovely people and your money will go a lot further.
For example in the resort I was staying in St Lucia cocktails were about $7, not expensive by UK standards. However we went for a quick drink in a local bar in the village, 3 g&t's and 5 beers cost $10 and the gorgeous bar woman was warning us to make sure we weren't getting ripped off Too late methinks. I'd go back in a shot but I wouldn't stay in a big resort.

We stayed in Cancun in October - hurricane season! Rained every evening and one or two days. Poss same further north in Caribbean in Oct.

Maldives fabulous if you like lazing on a beach and scuba diving/snorkling. October is best time to spot whale sharks and Manta rays. DH and I went to Fesdu All Inc and had a wonderful time. (But we are diving nutters)
Dunno about Sandals resorts.
We went to Hong Kong and Phillipines on Honeymoon late October and had the best time. Weather as fine too.

Have you looked at Pangkor Laut Resort in Malaysia? A Spa resort is where I would love to go in SE Asia.

Have you considered Sri Lanka?

Fabulous!

My mum has been to DR and Mexico and thought both were fab(and she is quite fussy) Friend of mine went to maldives and said it was beautiful however there's not much to do unless you're into scuba/diving. Also think it was pretty low key at night with not much going on

You could go to St Lucia on AI basis, that way you would be shelling out when you got there. I stayed at Rendezvous which is for couples only.

I went on honeymoon in October and we stayed at the Couples resort in Ochos Rios in Jamaica - I cannot recommend it enough, it was heaven on earth

Hi Smurfgirl,
Congratulations on your wedding. I have been to the Dominican Republic and Mexico (and Barbados, Antigua and the Bahamas). I wouldn't rush back to the DR but Mexico was fabulous. We stayed in Playacar which is a little way out of Cancun which I imagine would be more touristy and possibly tacky. There is plenty to see outside the hotels if you enjoy history. We hired a car and visited a couple of Mayan ruins sites and there are a couple of Eco parks in the area too.

I think the DR and Mexico are cheaper because of the volume of hotels in comparison with other Caribbean destinations. Also all the package tour operators offer charter flight deals to Mexico and the DR (and Cuba and Jamaica) whereas the smaller islands like Tobago, Aruba, St Kitts, Turks and Caicos and so on are more generally offered on a scheduled flight basis with Virgin, BA etc and this increases the cost.

The Maldives is generally considered one of the top honeymoon destinations because the islands are not promoted as family destinations and the hotels are small and secluded (one per island sometimes).

Dh and I got married in Mauritius which is also a beautiful and romantic island.

I think one of the main things you should consider is the weather which varies vastly from one island to another in the Caribbean. October can be the end of the rainy season and some islands are 'safer bets' weather wise than others in October. We were in the Bahamas for October half term last year and it was quite cloudy, wet and windy on several days.

Dubai is a pretty safe bet in October as far as sunshine is concerned. There are plenty of luxury hotels (check out the Al Qasr it's amazing) but of course it's not the Caribbean!

Generally the Sandals resorts are recommended for romantic couples' holidays - no children allowed. However they are usually much more expensive than other 5* All Inclusive hotels in the same destinations so IMHO I would save a little money and select another luxury hotel. I'd also skip Barbados for the same reason - it seems to be one of the more expensive Caribbean destinations from the UK. Antigua was nicer IMO. St Lucia is quite stunning because it is very green (it gets quite a lot of rainfall) and mountainous but, as the island is volcanic, the beaches do not have the pure white sand one might expect in the Caribbean.

I would also consider Sri Lanka and Malaysia - I believe that for an exotic destination they represent good value for money.

Bear in mind that wherever you decide to go prices will be much higher at the end of October which is half term.

Happy planning and do check out hotel reviews for ALL destinations on Tripadvisor . You can find out much more about the different Caribbean islands on the Caribbean-on-line discussion forums .

DR is cheap because it is such a poor area and still up and coming in the tourist stakes...went their 4yrs ago, and although not as swanky as st lucia, it was still beautiful and we found the people very friendly. Hotel very good...the only downside was that we found two wks in an all inclusive resort too long and got bored...in the DR there isn't much to do outside your resort, and it's still considered a little risky to venture out...but things have probably changed now
