Ile de Re or Ile de Oleron?

Flights are booked but can't find any (decent) accommodation in Ile de Re that's under £2k for a a week. I can find camping but even that is very expensive close to beach.

I am considering Ile de Oleron. I haven't been to either of these places before and wondering if anyone has any advice on where to stay?

We are a family of 4, DCs are 6 & 2. 6 year old can cycle, 2yr old is in trailer. We would ideally want to be near a sandy beach and would like to be self catering (cottage / gite ideal but otherwise camping)

Ile de re campsite I was looking at is £800 for a tent or £1200 for a mobile home (not a luxury one) which sent shivers down my spine. I don't mind paying that price (and more) but ideally for something nice...

Is it for this year? If it's school holidays, I think you might struggle now, certainly with the Ile de Rey, it's very popular with the French as well. Sorry it's not what you wnat to hear, but no point wasting time looking for somthing that won't be there...

Look at the mainland around Royan.. prob cheaper as Il De Re is very popular. Look for a gite on Owners Direct or Chez Nous.. you can always do a day trip to both islands.

not been to ile de re but have been to oleron for the last 5 years (we love it). Bike paths calm beach on the east side, good surfing on the west. Huttopia have two campsites there (one actually next to a beach)

I've been to both and hated the Ile d'Oleron. It could have been that we were there in late may/early June and they weren't in the mood for visitors yet but we found the people put out by our presence (in a mobile on a campsite), they were more on the ball on the ile de re but I didn't spend as long there. We also stayed in Chatelaillon plage and cycled from there to La Rochelle and to the ile de re. That was lovely.

We stayed on Ile d'Oleron a few years ago & found it lovely. It is not too big & the beaches are lovely. We stayed at a Eurocamp campsite (can't remember the name sorry but think it's still on their website). Think there is an Indigo campsite as well. We hired bikes as there are lots of cycling trails through the woods. You're close to the mainland & Royan for the zoo / bigger resort & beaches.

Only downside we found was the traffic can be bad at times as there are limited roads with it being a small island. We would definitely go back though.

My 11year old son and I camped in a campervan at camping Le Puma in La Couarde sur Mer on Ile de Re . Loved it there, it's quite basic and no pool but clean toilets and showers, across a road and down a long sandy track was the perfect beach. We used bikes to get around for the whole holiday and it is one of the best holidays we have ever had.

We've stayed at camping interlude on il de re and I would recommend highly.

We've been to Oleron and stayed in one of this gite's neighbours (on the Chemin de Peu Noir in Domino, outside St George). it sounds like it would tick all of your boxes.
