Car seat/taxi not sure what to do

Hello, just wondering if anyone can give me some advice. We are attending a family wedding in September and DS will be 7 months old. What do we do about the car seat? We'll be getting a taxi back to accommodation after the reception but we have a Cybex Sirona and obviously can't rely on the taxi having isofix. Is there anything I can buy which is more portable? Or is there another solution I am completely overlooking? I will be a bit sad if I have to drive!

Can you not strap it in with the seatbelt? That's what I do if I have to use a taxi or if someone else is giving me a lift, but I have a maxi cosi so don't know about the cybex. If you can't strap it in with the seatbelt, I would see if you could borrow a different car seat for a few days, one that you can use a seatbelt with.

TeddyIsaHe · 22/05/2017 13:05

You can get car seats for £30 or so that just strap in, I've done this for when we travel in taxis (I don't drive) and dh has the isofix in the car all the time. Would that possibly work?

BertieBotts · 22/05/2017 13:08

If you still have the rear facing carry type seat use that. If not can you borrow one? A 7 month old will fit in and they can be fitted with the seatbelt. Most modern cars do have iso fix though so I'd be surprised if the taxi doesn't.

NameChange30 · 22/05/2017 13:16

A few options:

  • Borrow a car seat that can be fitted with a seatbelt
  • Call the taxi company and ask if they can provide a taxi with isofix or with a car seat
  • Buy a car seat that can be fitted with a seat belt (but only really worth it if you'll use it again)
daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 13:20

He's really long and he doesn't fit in the seatbelt one we have - are some bigger than others? His head is level with the top of the seat now so I can only imagine he will be well over at 7 months!

Legally you don't have to be in a carseat in a taxi.

dementedpixie · 22/05/2017 13:22

Can Hackney cabs not accommodate a buggy ? If that was an option you could use the buggy rather than a car seat

daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 13:27

Frazzled it's the safety aspect, definitely. It's 30 miles on the motorway, I would rather walk it than not put him in a car seat Smile

Demented I don't think we will be in a Hackney, more likely your big standard Mondeo or whatever.

Does anyone know if there are carry type seats for long babies?

Thanks all for advice so far

I don't understand how he could already not fit into your carrier as he must only be about 4 months? My dd is nearly 8 months and is really long but still fits in the carrier no problem.

littletwofeet · 22/05/2017 14:30

What carrier have you got? I am confused too as to why he doesn't fit into it. I thought the newer ones now went up until 15 months.
Has it got a newborn insert you haven't taken out? I can't see even the biggest 7 month old (never mind 4 month old) not fitting into a group 0 car seat.

daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 15:21

It's a concord neo, honestly his head is at the top and there's no bits to take out that I can see but will have another look and see if I've missed something.

OP posts:
beekeeper17 · 22/05/2017 16:09

I'm not familiar with that one but any car seats I looked at had a newborn insert which you take out when they get a bit bigger. A quick google says that the concord neo pram comes with the concord air car seat and it's a group 0+ which will last until baby is 13kg, approximately 18 months. So there's something not right if your 4 month old doesn't fit in it.

Hopefully you'll get sorted and be able to use it for a bit longer including the wedding!

daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 16:16

Thank you beekeeper I did think the most likely explanation was me being thick Grin I'll have a look later

OP posts:
beekeeper17 · 22/05/2017 16:22

Not thick at all! If it makes you feel any better, I just realised the other day that you can turn off the music that plays on my baby monitor from the handheld bit. I've been creeping into my baby's room to turn it off at the actual monitor bit once she fell asleep for all these months! Doh!

BertieBotts · 22/05/2017 19:21

Eh? The i-size newborn seats which are classified by height (length) rather than weight all go up to about 85cm. That's off the charts at 15 months, let alone 7, or 4! There is one which is smaller at 75cm but even that's off the charts at 7 months so he should definitely be able to fit :S

Defo feed back how it goes :)

CurlsLDN · 22/05/2017 19:26

Sounds like you'll be able to use your seat with pp's help, but to offer another solution, many taxi companies have their own car seats - just phone up, ask, and book it to arrive with the car seat already fitted. Easy!

BertieBotts · 22/05/2017 19:26

If you want maybe you can take a picture? You can cover his face with something if you prefer.

daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 20:04

The car seat is in the car with DH so can't show you at the moment but I just measured DS and he's 71cm...so I'm wondering if the one I have tends towards the smaller and that's why he's bursting out

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 22/05/2017 20:51

Shock Blimey he's going to be about eight feet tall!! You might be out of luck then... but I'd see if you can borrow a Maxi Cosi or something, they tend to be a bit longer.

daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 20:56

Bertie I know! No doubt going to cost me an absolute fortune in clothes and shoes. I will ask around and see if anyone has a maxi cosi, I suppose the thing to do would be try him in one a few weeks before we go. I'm going to have to drive aren't I. How annoying!

OP posts:
NapQueen · 22/05/2017 21:00

OP the headrest part of your infant seat pulls up further above the shell of the carseat so you should get more length out of it.

Word of warning as ds is tall - the cybex sirona has the shortest shell of all the erf seats so it is highly likely they will be too tall for it by about 2.5.

daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 21:04

Napqueen no don't say that!! Ferrrrrk. I've had an absolute nightmare with car seats all week as my stupid car has a bucket seat in the back and I can't find anything that reclines properly that my giant child fits into. Cybex had the best recline so that's why I bought it. I wouldn't mind but I changed my bloody sporty car for a bloody Ford Focus when I got pregnant so there would be room for a pram - never imagined the back seat would cause such issues! Thank goodness we are planning to have another baby, at least I'll get some use out of the bloody expensive Cybex.

OP posts:
daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 21:05

Thank you for telling me to pull the headrest up though I'll have a look

OP posts:
NapQueen · 22/05/2017 21:06

Honestly I was shocked. A friend had it for her dd who is probably average height and she ended up buying the Britax Two way Elite. We have two of these and my own dd (average height of a 6yo) has only just outgrown the twe.

You are right though it is a great seat and will get lots of use with another baby. And its so pretty. But its a very short shell.

daisygirlmac · 22/05/2017 21:10

Watch my next baby be even bigger Grin
