This cold weather has got me dreaming of distant shores. Eight and a half years ago dh and I spent a few days in a beautiful little place called Pebbly beach between Canberra and Melbourne. It is totally unspoilt. Little sandy beach, hundreds of wild kangaroos, beautiful colorful parakeets that feed from your hand and the odd goanna lizard roaming around. We were the only tourists there and stayed in an old rundown caravan without electricity. Bliss...... Must go back have a family holiday there.

Thassos, Greece. Specifically a tiny village called Skala Panagia (known as Golden Beach in the brochures but don't let that put you off).
Heaven.

sassy · 16/03/2007 11:34

Oh, and the area around Fowey in Cornwall.

dither · 16/03/2007 11:36

mines in Oz too... driving about the tablelands, coast and further inland in north queensland and nsw. and i have it on good authority that the national park right at the top of Oz in northern territories is stunning.

HappyDaddy · 16/03/2007 11:48

Any where away from the towns in Barbados.

Also, British Virgin Islands is pure paradise.

cremolafoam · 16/03/2007 11:56

agree with adad- Gorges de verdon just amazing- breathtaking mountains and the gorge is stunning.we stayed in La Palud and Riez last year

also Brampton Island off Queensland coast.it a nature reserve with THE most beautiful unspoilt beaches.very wild.

one of my favorite places is also Connemara in west Galway.the drive from Clifden to Westport cannot be beaten on a sunny day.

Ooh I've got so many

Bora Bora - where DH and I spent 5 days as part of our honeymoon - truly amazing

Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand and anywhere around Glenorchy - incredibly beautful

Permaquid (sp?) Point in Maine, US. Stunning lighthouse and rock formations with the Atlantic crashing in against the waves

In this country:
North Devon and Pembrokeshire Coast Lines
The view from the top of Sharpe Edge in the Lake District
The view from the top of Y Garn in Snowdonia National Park

I could go on and on and on!!

HandbagAddiction · 16/03/2007 11:58

Oh yes Cremola - totally forgot about the Gorges du Verdon - spent 2 weeks there pre children years ago and it was amazing!

cremolafoam · 16/03/2007 12:13

was lovely

Rantum · 16/03/2007 12:18

Lamu - an island in the Indian Ocean off of the coast of Kenya - it was very beautiful on the island (and the view of the Kenyan landscape on the flight from Nairobi was incredible too).

Also, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand (and much of N.Z in general)

Actually, really liked most places that I have been for very different reasons - so it is really hard to pick one!

Sounds amazing Kerrymum. I know what you mean about the big skies.

beginning to feel I havent been anywhere.... Alhough I live next to a beach in Ireland which is 3 miles long and very beautiful when tide is out...

It is lovely to read about places that are closer to home - makes me feel I could actually see something beautiful.

You will have to forgive me if I seem full of drivel - it is St Patricks day over here and once church and the parades are over, by about 2.00, the pubs fill up, and even spending a day in a put would be lovely....

laurawaterford · 17/03/2007 23:10

that is supose to read 'a day in a pub' - honest I havent been in one today - too many children. However I did have champagne with my bacon and cabbage and my DH said that was probably a first

Linnet · 17/03/2007 23:18

Banff,Canada. Dh and I got married there 5 years ago this year. We're hoping to go back for a holiday next year if we can save up enough money.

SlightlyMadScientist · 17/03/2007 23:24

Can I be sad and change the tone of this thread...I am not going for a paradise like beach but.....

Hastings (yes on our own south coast).

We went there for a holiday last year and it was fab. Loads for the kids to do (and los of free museums and stuff - very friendly, nice community atmosphere....lots of care over how it all looks...)

here, on my honeymoon

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 17/03/2007 23:30

Ali5, I love Dungeon Ghyll and the Langdale Pikes, too.

Abroad, the island of Maui - it has five distinct climate zones, and is truly amazing. Watching the sun come up from the to of its volcano is just about the only experience worth getting up at 2am for (you have to get up that early to get up the 3000m volcano)!

mommajools · 17/03/2007 23:48

hout Bay South Africa beach

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 18/03/2007 12:31

Vanois national parc in France

Babyramone · 18/03/2007 15:22

I've been to a few really lovely places but madly the north west coast of Scotland was the best. I remember sitting on a beach looking at the most amazing sunset across the Atlantic.
It was almost spiritual.
There's something about the air quality too, it's so clear and seemed to make colours more vivid.

knakered · 18/03/2007 16:51

I ahve been to many of the places mentioned above - but my heart is in the west coast of ireland especially over looking Clew Bay in Mayo - archipeligo of 300 islands - stunning mountains love the bleak atlantic wind every time I go back (2-3 times a year) it makes my heart sing

crispyduck · 18/03/2007 16:53

greeny...went there absolutely stunning

wotzsaname · 18/03/2007 16:54

DimpledThighs me too (Mull) I have a picture of Calgary Bay in profile which I took on my 40th Birthday.

Bucketsofdynomite · 18/03/2007 17:06

The Lycian coast of Turkey on a gulet (motorised yacht thing.) Swimming in inaccessible rocky bays in the sunset, eating delicious fresh Turkish food, sleeping under the stars. I went on a kind of posh singles holiday and would love to go with extended family when the kids are older. The only downside would be lack of privacy!
