Hi my daughter and her boyfriend will shortly be finishing their first year at Uni, they have both worked very hard and we have offered to take them away for a short break. They don't want to go somewhere by themselves, seem happy to go with us! I know Center Parcs would be good but am trying to think of an alternative. They are art students and love going to galleries, love foodie places as they are both into cooking. Brighton would fit the bill except they can go there anytime as they are at Uni in Chichester. Any ideas please, self catering for space and prob no more than a 4 hour drive from Kent. Thank you.

Bath? Oxford? Barcelona?

Floralnomad · 01/05/2017 12:32

Paris - no idea where you'd stay though .

How about hiring a canal boat on the Kennett and Avon canal. Stop of overnight at Bathampton and walk into Bath. Beautiful city, visit the spa. Great places to eat.

Amsterdam.... Van Gogh museum... ?

SallyGinnamon · 01/05/2017 13:25

Accommodation in Amsterdam is really expensive. Too dear for us!

We've just been to Rome. Ryanair flights and a lovely apartment in Trastevere. Two adults and two late teens. We went the week before Easter and it was fabulous.

History, galleries, shopping, parks, views and food.

Madrid - lovely city, compact enough to walk everywhere if you want but also a dead easy to use metro system if you don't. Lovely galleries, lots of places to eat etc. Etc.

Some lovely ideas but don't think my budget would stretch to going abroad. Really can only afford about £650 for accommodation, would like to go for 4 nights if poss as its an effort for my dh who has Parkinsons, and I have just finished cancer treatment! So we all need a break...........canal boat sounded nice but not sure about privacy! Cheaper for us to drive somewhere and take some food and wine with us.

They both did Amsterdam 2 years ago with the college, loved it but did say then how expensive it was.

I've really enjoyed Bristol as a city and we did Bath as a day trip. We even went by bus from Bristol to Bath and it didn't take long at all. I also found Clifton really nice. Maybe look at an Airbnb

Go to Berlin on the train and see if you (or they) can get into Berghain, the ultimate club place. For galleries, where to start? The Pergamon Museum probably, so much choice. Consult The Man in Seat 61 for everything you need to know about train travel anywhere. You don't need a car in Berlin. If you do this trip you might prefer to break in Brussels for a night to arrive fresh in Berlin, but if you come back on a Monday, the early express direct to Brussels (change at Brussels Midi for Eurostar) non-stop will get you back to London that evening.

York

Biarritz - very cheap.flights, lovely place. Very young and vibrant with good restaurants.
In U.K. Maybe Dartmouth/Salcombe or Southwold area.

Looks like abroad isn't an option this time, but do tell them to get themselves to Berlin as soon as humanly possible. It sounds perfect for them.

For this time, how about Liverpool? Some great art galleries, plenty of food options, good theatres and a great city generally. I don't know how long it would take to drive therethough, sorry, so it may be too far.

Otherwise, London. Always.

Leeds/West Yorkshire. You should be able to get a serviced apartment/travelodge.

There is the Leeds Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Salt's Mill at Saltaire including David Hockney gallery, Barbara Hepworth gallery in Wakefield, loads of street food cabins and great restaurants in the Trinity Shopping Centre, absolutely loads to see and do in the city and surrounding areas.
