Dubai in August - are we crazy?

Want to go back this year. Last time we went in October. Thinking of December this time . However £1k+ cheaper in August. How hot is it in August? Bearing in mind we have survived a 7 day 40c + heatwave in oz, with not much air conditioning. Can you sit outside at all or do you need to be in the water the whole time? Is it humid? (Dry heat in oz).

I used to live in the ME. It really is too hot, we came home every August and that's with the rest of the year to acclimatise.

And yes, they do chill the pools.

smurfpoo they may be talking about Ramadan but that moves so can be at any time of year. The place is pretty quiet in summer as both expats and locals tend to ship out.

Ramadan this year is late May to late June, so not relevant. No, August is unbearable. I used to live there, and in August it was an effort to sit on our eighth-floor balcony overlooking the water for 20 minutes to get some Vitamin D. Sitting with sweat oozing out of you is not pleasant, and yes, it is absolutely possible to fry an egg by sun power. Pools and the sea (if you were ok with the pollution) were like swimming in soup, and sand from mid-morning till four-ish was too hot to walk on barefoot -- some of the big hotels were talking about installing cooling pipes under their beaches when I lived there. And it's gets dark by 6.30 or 7 again.

"Could do Europe in the summer but not been well and wanted to really look forward to something!"

So you write off the entire of Europe as not being special enough for you Hmm

TBH I don't understand why anyone would want to go to Dubai at any time.

As everyone else has said - do not go. Regarding October, there is more to the world than beaches and pools. Try California in November and South Africa is great at that time.

We went to Dubai for a week. Yes, a fantastic hotel, great shopping and a great desert with camel racing and water park but really there are more interesting places to go. In our summer, anywhere in northern South America, e.g. Brazil is great. Not too hot but interesting. Great beaches too.

Not many people do it, but one of our best holidays was on a small ship sailing around Spitzbergen. Literally the polar opposite of Dubai, but fantastic scenery, great people on board and polar bears. Sailing along the edge of a vast wilderness of ice with nothing between us and the North Pole was amazing. What more could you want?

Michael McIntyre sums up Dubai in the summer

MardAsSnails · 30/03/2017 15:34

Too hot, and too quiet in my opinion.

Part of the joy of the place is sitting outside in the evenings for dinner, and most terraces will be shut (because not many are daft enough to stay for the summer unless they HAVE to)

I'm escaping for the first time in 10 years this August and it's only for a week, but I'm looking forward to the reprieve!

Iam. Didn't Mean Europe isn't special. I just thought we would be going away later in the year and had built myself up to wait for the holiday and not have it over and then have a gloomy winter. Which leaves winter destinations. I was comparing a week in
Lanzarote in August with a week in Dubai and it was the same price.
Have been to Dubai before. Loved it so this would have been an exception to my thinking!! Would save 2k on the October price and 1.5k on December.
As I said I was not well and 8 weeks ago was told I might not make it! So want a really nice hotel and don't want it to be over too soon!!
Thanks for all your comments.
In the meantime am enjoying looking at all the holidays! And am keeping my eye on Dubai for a December bargain! I did find a good deal on the hotel I want then went to hospital!
And who ever now lives in Perth (sorry on app so can't see) you are so lucky. Love it there. My db lives there. We were there a few years ago and did an Xmas heatwave!

I wouldn't do Dubai in December either, if your holiday is a beach and pool. It's not quite warm enough, unless the pool is heated. Dubai in Oct, or somewhere else summer or December.
Happy booking.

Far too hot. 420c and 70% humidity. Sea is like a hot bath so no relief there.
