Florence or Venice both?

Ok, 13 year old dd wants to go to both and can't decide which.
I know it will cost a fortune and I know it may seem strange to some.

However, that aside any ideas on how we can afford it?
How to not get fleeced.

There is an opera house in Venice

MollyHuaCha · 04/03/2017 17:34

From the title I thought we were choosing baby names Grin

We preferred Venice to Florence, I found it unbelievably beautiful.
Just wondering around is a treat day and night.
I would recommend La Zucca restaurant if you go to Venice, it was the best meal we had in Venice and cheaper than less memorable meals we had there.

wandering not wondering!!

We went to Venice for a day trip when we stayed at Lake Garda last summer. It was beautiful! I didn't get to Florence but my husband and son did - hubby said it was just as good. Go to both!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 04/03/2017 20:39

Both! Spend a few days in one and then travel to the other.

Trains are great in Italy. You could stay on a campsite with a pool in the countryside near either and get in by public transport.

DH and I have been to Venice many times (at least 6 or 7) and we brought dd when she was 9 and she really loved it. It is so stunningly beautiful.

I have been to Florence 3 times and dh has been once with me and we are thinking of bringing dd this year or possibly next year.

They are both incredible in very different ways and both very worth visiting

We have also brought dd to Verona and Lake Garda and we enjoyed them too

If she likes opera then Venice, without a doubt. Ideally going to Verona.

You can then also go to La Fenice in Venice.

DH is an opera bore and we loved Musica a Palazzo in Venice which is an incredibly intimate opera experience (the experience mentioned by IAdoreEfteling above) - a great contrast to the big spectacle of the arena in Verona. This may even convert you to opera as they cut down the work massively skips the boring bits and the location is awesome which makes it incredibly moving.

Venice.

MrsPeelyWaly · 08/03/2017 11:57

Of the two I would say Venice.

And you may like to consider this -

Ive been to a few performances and have never been disappointed.

And I no longer stay in hotels due to the generally poor standard but Ive been very happy with the Airbnb apartments I've stayed in recently.

MrsPeelyWaly · 08/03/2017 11:58

Sorry, I see others also mentioned Musicapalazzo.

My DSS went with his girlfriend to Venice and they stayed in an AirB&B and ate food from the markets - also stand up tapas style food at night.

It's a beautiful place. I haven't been to Florence since I was a kid and I loved it - school trip.

Do both.

Just to throw another idea into the mix, I've just had an email about the Puccini Opera festival near Lucca in July/August, which you could combine with Florence.

allegretto · 23/03/2017 06:32

How long are you going for? If it's more than a few days you could definitely do both.

blueistheonlycolourwefeel · 23/03/2017 06:37

Venice is NOT expensive! Keep away from St Mark's Square and it's fine.
I've been to both and I like Venice more.

HelenDenver · 23/03/2017 06:50

Venice at the end of June?

DH went in summer years ago and found it smelly. Things may have changed - residents on this thread...?

Absolutely you can do both, though I'd do Pisa, Lucca and Florence for preference!
