We're planning on going in early July. Is this a terrible idea due to too many tourists and heat ? I'd love some ideas on places to stay (hotel or Airbnb), restaurants, sights and experiences.

TIA

And the fruit/fish market early in the morning under the Rialto. See if you can find the bacari near there called Da Mori. That's about as authentic an experience as you're going to get. There are no seats and the bar staff don't know how to smile - but this is where the market holders go for an early morning drink and the snacks snd wine are perfect.

We've been in may and start of august (with 4 children). may was nice but a bit chilly for the beach.
August was hot but not unbearably so.
My big tip is to go to big sites early or late when not so busy..... and then go for a bimble off the main tourist trial- after just a few minutes it gets much quieter and still just as magical. near st marks square/rialto does get quite busy at times.
Burano is really really pretty
you will have a fab time.....cant wait to go back myself

I've been in August and September. Both were hot but not unbearable. Surprisingly, it was less busy in August. The best bit is just walking around. So many charming little streets. But I also agree with PP about Burano. We just got a vaporetto there. Don't bother with the Lido - just a rather small, dull beach.

Thanks TheDogsMother - I manage without any inhalers in rural England but annoyingly my fave holidays are city breaks. Amsterdam was a disaster - straight back home onto a course of pred.

Following on from baregrylls, if you're unfortunate to get stuck in crowds, it's dreadful. We made the big mistake of going into Saint Marco during the carnevale and it was awful. The only way in and out is over tiny bridges, and there's always an idiot with a camera who has to take a picture at the top. Having said that, just avoid St Marks.

Totally agree. We booked the Doge's Palace for the crack of dawn and were out before the crush built up in the square.

When we went in August it was a fight for a square foot to stand on, DH has a lovely picture of me starting to pass out on a packed vaporetto, and we headed out for sanity and space on the lagoon islands as soon as possible. Which was lovely and romantic when we got to Burano and Torcello - I did tell him that Venice was crap before we got there though Shock but that was on the Lido which was just bloody dull.
