LONDON: Visits near Liverpool St Stn

I want to take my children (all preschool) into London to meet with some friends. We want to meet up somewhere within reasonable striking distance of Liverpool Street Station - a short direct tube journey or a manageable walk.

It needs to be somewhere with something to do for the children, and cafe for lunch.

Any recommendations?

They're probably too young to ice-skate but
next door is the Broadgate Centre with shops and cafes and an outdoor skating rink.
Actually I think Liverpool Street is a pretty dull area for entertainment.

Not much for kids in that area, it's pretty much a financial district. You could always go down to the Tower of London, or walk along the river bank, near London bridge station is Hays Galleria for cafes and a few shops but again, nothing for kids.

Am still thinking though....

Geffrye-museum.org.uk is a short bus ride away. Sorry don't know how to do links! Also try the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood, its just had amajor refurb. My DH took our girls aged 8 and 6 and they loved it. I think there is an urban farm in the area but I don't know what it's called.

Have a lovely day out.

There is the quite small, but very kid-friendly Spitalfields City Farm which is only a quick stride from Liverpool Street Station.

You can have lunch in the half of Old Spitalfields Market which is left standing (you can get your food from any of a number of vendors, then all sit in the communal seating in the middle and eat together)!

There's also the Museum of London at the other end of London Wall from Liverpool Street and interesting bits of the remnants of the old wall to see en route (or you can follow the yellow line through the middle of the Barbican and its fountains.

If it's a nice day you can sit out in the little hidden oasis of Exchange Square behind Liverpool Street Station

How about taking the Circle Line around to Westminster and going to the Aquarium, which is right next to the London Eye

I like SpareWheel's suggestions - you can walk to them, and the old bit of Spitalfields Market does have a super vibe.
If the weather is bad I'd head for the Geffrye, one of London's unsung gems.

museum of childhood would prob be best and hackney city farm is about 15 min walk. how young are children? couple of stops down the central line you will find discover which is fab but otherwise stratford is not really what i'd call a nice day out!

Try this link which shows a map and the listings in that area for kids. They include the Tower of London and the St John Cafe
