Holiday ideas for middle aged couple?

We're at an impasse.

For years our main hol has been 3 weeks in very high end villas in the likes of Tuscany and California where we're miles away from anywhere and basically blob by the pool, potter to nearest towns for meals but otherwise do virtually nothing.

This was always because dh has a big job, travels constantly and just needed to switch off completely. Ds in his 29s so hasn't come with us for several years.

So, this year, dh is retiring at 54 so my thinking is that it's about time we did something a bit more adventurous but so far, we have no ideas.
Negatives are:-

Dh is black and we aren't going to be spending our tourist dollars in the US while Trump and his KKK cronies are in power.

I'm totally Italy'd out.

Neither crazy about beach hols (tho we love the Maldives for the snorkelling.

I suggested Croatia but he's put off by reports of rampant racism there.

We like Morocco but have done it 3 times in last 3 years. Twitchy about other Islamic countries and Dubai's our idea of hell.

We have come to a dead end.

What we like is:-

Luxury

Walking
Tennis
Cycling
Eating great food
Peace
Oldy worldy architecture
Beautiful scenery as in lakes, mountains

Money not an issue.

Any ideas very welcome, I can see us staying home at this rate

Cycling in camobodia?? I went last October and it was so hot!! and the temples are not that close to each other. But I agree the temples are amazing but IMO Burma (myanmar) is a million times better and the Governor hotel in Yangon is fantastic.
Venezuela?? You can not even buy toilet paper and food in the supermarkets!!
Ecuador is really dangerous.

LexieLulu · 05/02/2017 16:56

I would like to recommend Kenya, Mombasa. We went a few years ago and the majority of holidayers were middle age (we were in our twenties but we are quite mature and didn't want a young holiday).

Safaris are brilliant, you do loads but you don't actually wear yourself out.

Amazing experience and somewhere not many would think to go

LemonyFresh · 05/02/2017 17:05

Cuba 100%!!!

You have the architecture, history and culture in Havana, the beautiful scenery in Vinales and if you did fancy a bit of sun and sea, Varadero is close by for that. All hotels also have tennis and sports facilities.

You can get multi place holidays so you can go to perhaps 3 different places to fit all criteria.

Cuba is also very safe and great for cycling. Flights are also direct and only 8-10 hours.

Second Mexico. Plenty of oldy worldy architecture, the nature is amazing, and lots of luxury hotels. Check out i-escape or mrandmrssmith

BendyBusBuggy · 05/02/2017 17:10

(obv avoid Cancun)

hifi · 05/02/2017 18:57

I wouldn't go to Mexico if DH is black. we had a few horrible experiences there. Same with the Caribbean, especially with high end accommodation.
We've never had any problems in Asia.
Vietnam is great, Saigon then a beach resort.

ShanghaiDiva · 06/02/2017 07:34

Yes chiqiita1 - cycling in siem reap. I'm there at the moment and see lots of cyclists every day!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/02/2017 07:37

Slovenia.

Beautiful scenery, gorgeous capital city, Lake Bled, Julian Alps, Lipica, caves and castles...

crocodarl · 06/02/2017 08:16

Definietely Slovenia. We live there. It would be perfect for you, covers everything you're after. X

elQuintoConyo · 06/02/2017 08:22

Guatemala.

chewingawasp · 06/02/2017 08:29

Slovenia gets my vote too. Fab scenery and great cycling.

I am about the same age as your DH (very jealous he can retire!) and DH is a bit older.

From your list of likes we share luxury, walking, eating good food.

For the last few years we have enjoyed self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking holidays. InnTravel are very good and for France we have used Sentier de France. The hotels we have stayed in have always been really nice and there are well thought out walking routes to get you from one place to another. Sort of trekking but without the roughing it aspect!

mumblechum0 · 08/02/2017 21:01

Many thanks everyone (and yes, 5foot5, he's counting down the last couple of weeks now!).

We're spoiled for choice with all the fab suggestions on this thread. So far we've chartered a yacht around the Greek Islands followed by a villa on Aegina for June. In Sept I like the sound of the self guided hotel to hotel walking holiday very much, and then Caribbean in December.

Canada, or maybe India, doing one of those luxurious train journeys, for at least part of the time.

TrickyD · 18/02/2017 22:28

Bit late finding this thread but for future reference how about Mauritius? Some lovely hotels, we stayed at the Maritim. Plenty of interesting places to visit. Sri Lanka? Delicious food,, very friendly people and fascinating history. Unlike India, no hassle from beggars or heartbreaking poverty.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 18/02/2017 22:36

I would highly recommend South Africa. You can hike, cycle, visit museums, go on safari, go to high end restaurants, shop, lie on a beach, go wine tasting - it's a fabulous destination which ticks every box. I did a tour for a month a few years ago and didn't even scrape the surface in that time. I'd money's no object if even look at going on the Blue Train and visiting Kimberley (that's on my wish list). Amazing experience Smile

FireInTheSky1 · 25/02/2017 22:58

I like holidays that involve travel to different places and take a few weeks with a combination of fly and public transport & drive

Pick the main places that you want to visit
Find some places that you didnt know existed & visit

UK & Ireland tour (lots of history, castles, towns, museums, pubs, scenery)
If you time it right you can add in a few festivals, fetes, events

Iceland and UK

New Zealand Tour

Europe Tour

Thailand island hopping and if you have time and money onto Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore

empirerecordsrocked · 25/02/2017 23:00

Muscat and the rest of 🇴🇲 oman -Amazing. 6 star luxury. Multi cultural.

Helenluvsrob · 02/03/2017 16:56

Iceland every time though luxury there will be expensive. It's beautiful in summer

FairyPenguin · 08/03/2017 08:13

DH and I also like similar types of holidays: particularly good food and fantastic scenery. I love the suggestion of San Sebastián - off to research it now!

motheroftwoboys · 16/03/2017 15:14

We are a bit older than you but like the same things. Recent brilliant holidays include first time all inclusive in Mexico which was fabulous,,, 3 weeks exploring Sicily and Caribbean cruise/stay in Miami. Cruises tick all the boxes - have been on quite a few and going on another in the summer. Always great to stay over a few days at the part you are departing from or arriving at - or both!
