Farnborough Air Show regretting asking dp if he would like to go....anybody been?

I've never been to an air show because they always seem to have horrible accidents and also not my idea of great day out, but in a mad moment I suggested going to dp. He was very excited at the thought and now a few weeks later I don't know whether to get tickets (he hasn't mentioned it) It would only be us two (romantic heh.)

I have now also raised his hopes while watching football suggesting going to next World Cup!

I have history of doing this, our first holiday together was snowboarding (at 43!!)

I used to go to the Farnborough air show with my dad and always enjoyed it immensely. Can't say that it is a particularly romantic outing (but then I was with my dad ), but you could always try out one of the inflatable lifeboats...

No, honestly, air shows can be great fun...but personally I would draw the line at the World Cup! Won't he be chuffed if you do get tickets though?

prettycandles · 21/06/2004 15:01

For Farnborough I mean, not the World Cup!

lemonice · 21/06/2004 15:06

What are the inflatable life boats? I'm sure he would be v pleased but I looked at the website and saw 5 halls of trade stuff, but I'm sure he wouldn't want to look in those - would he?

For the air display is it better to go in the grandstand or not necessary?

IIRC, and it's been a few years, most of the trade stuff is strictly trade and anoraks only, but the military stuff is usually very interesting. Some of the trade stuff is interesting too, but you might have to wade through a lot to find it.

The bits that always stick in my memory are the safety, survival and rescue gear - ejection seats, compressed rations, inflatable liferafts etc. I don't know whether you can actually get into the liferafts, but if you could you'd get a bit of privacy in them!

I don't think we ever got grandstands, just wandered around and looked up every so often. There are loads of planes and stuff outside on the ground, so-to-speak.

It actually says that the air display lasts for 4 and half hours so I doubt we could sit still that long so may save the grandstand cost! I might take the plunge but we will probably have to stay locally on Saturday night as it seems to start at 9.00am. Will have to see if any nice cheap pub or similar nearby.

We used to drive from N London, and the traffic was appaling when we got close to the show. B&Bing sounds nice - possibly a way to get a bit of romance into the outing!

We've been to airshows and even though I'm totally ignorant about planes and stuff, I really enjoyed them. I'd love to fly in a jet plane (they sometimes do training flights over our valley here) and of course, the male pilots are very handsome.

Don't let that glamour fool you Sue, under those cute little uniforms they are all wearing naff long johns........and I speak from experience. Marry one of them an you will spend the rest of your life packing

They are fun days out but very noisy.

lemonice · 21/06/2004 16:05

Well the idea came up when we went to the midland air museum ( just a little enthusiasts museum) and I sat in A vietnam war plane which was quite a strangely emotional experience.

I live under the flight path, it's awesome, also recommend the air tattoo
Really awesome to see and hear!

suedonim · 21/06/2004 17:24

Lol, Hmb! I guess I've seen TopGun too many times. Dh used to be Royal Navy and then offshore, so I'm used to longjohns, hee hee.

hmb · 21/06/2004 17:30

Probably the same issue!

Yes - have been, many yearsago and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We went on the train from London so probably missed some of the morning things.`My favourite thing was seeing concorde land right in front of us - guess they don't have that now, but it was all fascinating (I had no prior interest in planes). We'd like to take our kids one day, but for now they're a bit little and it is verrrrry loud so taking a pair of earplugs might be a good idea!! Great fun though - I'd go again.
