Want to visit for a week end of June. Any recommendations for accommodation please? Ideally 4*, pool, no small children (Dd's request!), al fresco dining with hb option, sea views, access to station ... Current quote is £5k plus for a week for 4 Shock Also does anyone know about individual tours of Pompeii with access to non public areas.

We stayed in Hotel Capodimonte which was lovely but about 15 mins walk to the train station. There's a tourist office just next to the station entrance where you can book Pompeii tours. You can also get the bus to the Amalfi coast and ferry to Capri so it's a good base. We went in May which we were told is the relatively quiet season but the weather was lovely and not uncomfortable for sightseeing.

We really liked Sorrento but it does get ridiculously busy on the days that cruise ships are docked. I'd recommend the restaurants on Marina Grande - Bagni Delfino was great and there is a small family run fish restaurant (Portofino I think it's called) which was lovely and really reasonably priced. For the best gelato go to Zinis.

We absolutely loved Sorrento when we went about a decade ago and returned there recently for our honeymoon. We have stayed in La Vue D'or and Grand Hotel Vesuvius. The latter had mixed reviews and was a little dated but we enjoyed it. We always stayed out of the centre but both hotels provided a shuttle. There are some amazing restaurants out there, for example Marameo Beach, L'Antica Trattoria, and Ristorante Zi'Ntonio. Next time we aim to rent an apartment and take advantage of the amazing food on offer and cook for ourselves

I can also highly recommend Bar Ercolano for a nice drink at Piazza Tasso. Service was really good and it's a nice place to watch the world go by

Slightly concerned now... anyway I've booked a week in August for myself and daughter in Grand Europa with Thomas Cook, only hotel, flights, breakfast however it was only £1350 and has fairly decent reviews and central, pool, private harbour, views etc if that helps

I stayed in sant agnello which was a village connected to sorrento if that makes sense. Could walk there or have a nice meal in sant agnello plus the train is on the same line. It's not as busy as sorrento and I loved it. Cost 600 per person last year - worth a look. Stayed in grand hotel Parco del sole. Only downside waa horrible coffee I
With breakfast!

Please don't be concerned. It depends on what you expect but I have been to Rome and Venice, and Sorrento was by far my favourite. I don't think it is run down at all, and yes it is slightly busy, but it is a town full of charm and the restaurants are amazing

We stayed in this hotel in Naples for a long weekend. Fantastic views. It has a small pool on the roof.
We visited Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri whilst staying there.
The hotel organised our Pompeii trip. We caught ferries from the harbour for the other trips.

Thanks all for tips for Positano. Hope I am not derailing OP.

We stayed self-catering in a little village nearby called Santa Agatha (I think), it was a short bus ride to Sorrento & far cheaper. We hired a car for trips to Pompeii & got the ferry to Capri. I loved the Amalfi coast but was glad we didn't stay in Sorrento itself. When the cruise ships cane in it was really busy & very expensive.

I absolutely agree that no-one should be concerned re Sorrento - I absolutely loved it. It's so pretty. I prefer Amalfi, but that's just me and is mostly around lovely memories of trips there. Basically you can't really go wrong in Campania. Except driving through Naples, which when you fear imminent death and then decide that death would be preferable to driving through Naples. And the signage to the airport is non-existent.

I agree with Hassled and be careful if traveling from Naples to Sorrento by train. The line splits off and caught us out twice. Luckily a lovely local tour guide helped us
