I have found a really good deal for a week all inclusive to Tunisa but DH is worried about going there because he thinks we will get shot or something if we leave the resort. MIL has also said something similar. I really want to go and so do the kids.

yes shoulders, also down to knees.

my aunt is going to Egypt this year and they have a police escort from the airport to the hotel, thats scary.
Does the dress code include children??

have found another deal for 14 night, half board, for £200 more. Don;t know what to do, is all inclusive or half board better?

No not children and depending where you are it is quite lax for women, they want the tourism and they accept western ways. Found them to be really helpful friendly people in the hotels, need to take care when out in the medina, pickpockets etc.

I actually prefer half board - you are not so tied.

Have a look at Monastir/Skanes area, really close to the airport, beach excellent

SparklyGothKat · 06/02/2007 12:50

thats the area that I just found, what I am finding is that although there will be 6 of us (mum is coming too) they are trying to charge me for 3 rooms, when each room is for 3 people.

What hotel - may have visited it.

SparklyGothKat · 06/02/2007 13:03

We had an armed guard from the airport to the complex and back in Egypt. We also did a long bus trip across the Sinei desert to Cairo and had armed guards for that. The scariest thing was that they just chucked sports bags full of machine rifles down the bus aisle and then sat and slept for the whole trip. Weird.

the other place I am looking at is the Marhaba Club Hotel in Sousse

Why not have a look at Club med who have places in Tunisia and may not be as expensive as you think. December may be just a bit too chilly though.

tegan · 11/02/2007 17:52

We went to sousse in may 2005 and I have no complaints about the hotel or staff but you have to be pretty damn brave to leave the complex especially with kids.
The market sellers will grab the kids to get you in their shops and then will demand extraudinary amounts of money to let you out.

Also never get in a taxi without agreeing a price first.

DH just returned from there on biz, and we have booked a hol in Sousse for May Half Term. DH said obviously a developing country, but the hotel he stayed in (just a normal hol hotel, not a biz one, was fine - food okay tho' not vey exciting.)

tegan · 12/02/2007 13:19

I got confused sorry we stayed at the Houda golf and beach club in skanes and it was amazing. Look on the first choice web site that is who we went with.

kookaburra · 12/02/2007 15:57

Very reasuring thanks Tegan - we are going to that hotel with the same company!

Been to Tunisia in December, most of the time it was fairly dull weatherwise, with 1 sunny t-shirt wearing day. Stayed in Sousse, agree, you have to be brave to wander around the medina they do anything to get you in their shop/stall thing. Food wise it wasn't great either - I'd go fb so you don't have to worry about finding lunch.

tegan · 12/02/2007 17:14

The kids entertainer is caller fou fou (pronounced foo foo) is amazing.
On our last night we gave him and some of the other staff money in a blank envelope to show our gratitude, but you have to be careful doing this as they could lose there jobs for accepting so you have to do it on the quiet.

£10 is more than a months wages out there so they really do appreciate it.

1980cat · 13/02/2007 21:04

That looks realy like the hotel we stayed at in Tunisia last year at this time. It wasn't too hot only really got any good sun the day we were to leave.
The locals are pretty pushy about going into shops and that kind of put me off a bit but there was never anything scary or dangerous just different. Most of the hotels are pretty new and there was plenty to do if you are happy just to stay in the hotel and the beach was amazing.

stripeyink · 17/02/2008 19:17

Tunisia is pretty developed for a "developing country", I'd compare it to parts of southern Italy, and it's a lot safer (tough laws).
Try to leave the resort if you can - there's so much more out there to see, there's the best preserved colliseum in the world just a couple of hours south (El Jem).

We went a few years back & I can honestly say I wouldn't go back if u paid me! The shop holders were threatening, the markets were a nightmare and u even got hassled on the beach by vendors.

I was sick half way through with severe dehydration as a result of tummy problems. I ended up in hospital for 2 days too, which frighteningly was the best part for me.for hols.

Since dd arrived, I've found Crete/France/Spain tops. Easy 4 kids & parents alike!
