Taking a Pushchair on a Flight - Advice Please

Hello, first holiday abroad coming up. We haved booked with Ryanair, who, like most other carriers allow the pushchair to be taken right up to the aircraft, then it is taken away and bought back when we land. I have seen this done with compact Maclaren stroller type things but we have a two piece pram (bugaboo chameleon) and just wondered if anyone knew if they would put this in the hold too?

Be careful! Ryanair wrecked my buggy. And they make you sign a disclamer so you can't claim off them too.

Can you buy a cheap buggy for the holiday?

mrsflowerpot · 31/01/2007 13:34

not sure - you might have to check it in earlier if it's bulky. Would check with Ryanair.

Is your child old enough for a stroller - if so I would seriously consider buying a cheap lightweight one and taking that instead. Easier to manage and if it gets bashed about in the hold it won't be such a problem.

snap Budababe! once bitten...

Check that they will carry for free as some airlines only let you take for free a single folding pushchair if you know what I mean ... Mind you on E jet the other day a lady had a Icoo 2 bit and she took it to aircraft and the handlers took it away in 2 bits - both had to be tagged however.

My buggy hood got broken after a flight, they are just so rough with them!

If you have a two piece pushchair then unless you can attach the two pieces together you might find that you get the base back when you exit the plane and the other bit on the baggage carousel as the baggage handlers won't be buggy experts. Make sure you get a tag for each piece that shows they should be returned at the aircraft door.

If you really like your pushchair you might be better off buying a cheap/second-hand umbrella fold to take instead as pushchairs often get dirty/damaged on flights. Especially with an airline like Ryanair who are pants at customer services IME and don't take much care with baggage.

I took a 'travel system' on a plane (without the car seat though - that was checked in). They took it off me at the plane door and i got it back with the luggage. So yes they do put them in the hold, but its the last thing that goes in.

We've brought our buggy on a total of 8 flights and it's been fine. We've also brought carsets and they've been fine thoguh the hood bit did get detached. However, we've only ever brought an umbrella fold buggy (Pliko) I now have a two piece one (Buzz) and I definitely won't be taking it on our next flight, though I have seen others do so - more risk of it getting damaged. I definitely wouldn't bring a bugaboo as it's so expensive. Could you borrow a smaller buggy or even buy a cheapy one?

feetheart · 31/01/2007 13:45

Easyjet took our Jane 2-piece no problem a few years ago but would echo the cheap umbrella buggy advice. Went for this option as decided I didn't want to risk them trashing the most expensive baby-related thing we own

With Ryanair I'd check, check, then double check and then not believe a word they told me!!

katzg · 31/01/2007 14:22

i wouldn't take an expensive pram on a plane, buy a cheapy to take

Thank you all for your advice. I will definitely be purchasing an umbrella-folding type pushchair - the thought of the "chariot" getting trashed - nooo. Can anyone recommend a pushchair that can also recline so she can nap? Grateful as always for any suggestions.

How old is she? I bought a cheap Mothercare Citilite on ebay for travelling with ds, it was very comfortable for him and very light weight (around 5kg I think). It's not an umbrella fold but it does fold flat and it's very sturdy.

Otherwise, any of the reclining Mclarens would be fine.

mosschops30 · 02/02/2007 16:35

BA took our big pushchair and car seat when ds was only 8 weeks old, it went in the hold. However it was only a £150 Graco not sure I would want to chance it with a bugaboo

Jzee · 03/02/2007 08:35

I have a Jane Powertrack which I have taken on Virgin & BA luckily it hasn't been broken, but I have been left anxiously waiting for it at on arrival and found in some parculiar place! They do get scuffed up though, so I wouldn't risk it on a new Bugaboo. I also have a Maclaren XT for shopping etc and have found this very handy it also reclines.

KathG · 03/02/2007 23:31

We took zapp, pre-restrictions as handluggage on BA (it can go in a locker) brilliant knowing where it would be at the other end: DD2 has ear problems so is always in a bad way at the end of flights.
