Car seat on plane? Emigrating to Australia

We are leaving for Australia next month, yay!

DS is just two, we are flying via Singapore with Singapore Airlines (if that's relevant) and I am not sure whether to take the car seat. We have one with an impact shield so I'm not even sure if it would be suitable for the plane, and then we would have to dump it when we get there as it won't be legal to use.

I'm interested to know what you all do? Do you think a car seat is necessary on the plane? Are there any alternatives? Can a two yr old go on your lap during take off etc?

I know I could ring SA for some help, but thought I'd try mumsnet wisdom first so I don't look like a complete flying noob

Very late into the responses, but no, don't bother with a car seat for a two year old. Our two year old slept across two seats (Emirates were v helpful at allocating us an extra seat).

We liked our MaxiCosi seats in Australia, we had the Hera model. There was a bit of a todo with Euro models a few months back but I think it's all sorted now. We bought somethings from Baby Bunting in Victoria, which price matched/delivered/etc and had a loyalty scheme.

Forgot to add, the newer ones come with ISOfix, but it's not as good as the UK version. The seats come with a fixing to tether on the back of the rear seat (either clip or bolt, depending on your car), then fasten with the seat belt. They also have a metal locking clip which I've not seen in the UK. It's a faff to do the first time (the fitting guidance isn't clear), but you can pay about $30/40 per seat to have them 'professionally' installed.

Thanks Scot I think I'm going to have to wait until I get there and we see what car we get then. That'll be a lovely first trip out after 3 days of travelling!

I've bought the five point plus, hopefully that will help!

You could hire a baby seat in Australia when you arrive if you are not sure what you want yet.

Best place, I reckon, for car seats is Baby Bunting. They also have a fitting service. Big Australia wide company.
