On the outskirts, but work in the City.

Love it.

Where did you go, where did you stay?

Donbean · 29/01/2007 19:26

Stayed at my brothers who lives on the outskirts.
We just walked and walked. There were street entertainers and little markets and every spoken language that exsists from the people around us.
We had dinner at a lovely restraunt over looking the Thames just as the sun went down.
A virgin helicopter landed right in front of us! NO idea why!!!?
Went to trafalger square, the palace, saw Tower bridge, its all so new and clean, gorgeous!

how did you imagine it? i've hardly been anywhere north and probably imagine that all wrong

Donbean · 29/01/2007 20:07

I imagined it to be smelly, dirty, overcrowded and rushed.

I dont know where that perception came from, so dont ask!

I defo want to go back and do the museums and shopping.

lots of space but cold and grey! friendlier people though

saffy202 · 29/01/2007 20:58

We're going to London during half term, although I went once as a child, I too, as a northener share your perceptions Am pleased you enjoyed it - did you venture onto the tube? I am hoping I can avoid it.

Kbear · 29/01/2007 21:08

I hate the tube but it really is the best way to get around London. Get yourself an Oyster card if you're here for a few days - it's a prepay card you can pick up at tube/bus stations (not mainline trains for single journeys). Will save you lots.

Check out www.tfl.gov.uk - transport for London website.

I used to visit London (from Ireland) to see my Dad in the 80s. I think it's changed a lot. Most certainly cleaner and brighter, imo. I live here now and love it. I think it's a great city. It seemed more grim a few years back. That said, Dublin was worse!

CountessDracula · 29/01/2007 21:19

pmsl @ couldn't live there!

Glad you had fun!

TeeCee · 29/01/2007 21:27

LOL, you sound like you had a great time.
London really is a fab, fab city. I love it. You brought up the languages and that's one of the great things about London, it's so multicultural and cosmopolitan. It's actually very friendly, esp when you compare it to somewhere like Paris. If you come back make sure you do the whole south bank area. Do the London Eye and then walk around there by the Thames, it's fab, and do Covent Garden and Portabello Market as well.

Posey · 29/01/2007 21:31

I lived in the north til I was 19, then moved to London (been here 20 years now) and I love it. Could not imagine living anywhere else. All that stuff to do on your doorstep. I think it is totally fab place to live, and we do live it
Thanks for your nice comments though. A lot of people knock it and I feel very protective of my home town!
