Flying long haul with a baby - what do I need to know?

We need to take our DD out to NZ / Australia to meet family etc. She is now 9 weeks old and I seriously need to start thinking about when and how to do this.

Any advice really appreciated. What age is it best to do this? Is there a 'too early age'? How do you cope? What are the essentials to take? Any other advice?

I've heard the one about feeding or sucking dummy for take-off and landing, any more wisdom?

Many thanks

For me, personally, I would wait until baby has had all the shots etc so about 4 or 5 months. At that point, routines are a bit more settled and it might be a little bit eaiser.

  • the bottle or dummy for take-off and landing is to ease ear pressure and does work!
  • take more nappies than you think you need.
  • a change of clothes for you or anyone else who will be holding the baby!

I'm sure there will be others more wise who will have lots more advice for you - happy travels!

Many thanks coolmama, we are thinking five months would be an ok time. Good point about the jabs, I didn't consider that and will make sure they are all booked in and given on schedule!!
