Places to eat in the Vendee

Just that really. We've been camping here a couple of days, and the two meals we've had so far (lunch and dinner) have been pretty mediocre to be honest, and still cost €60 for 4 of us (no wine!).

Would rather cook more at the campsite and spend my hard earned pennies on a couple of knock-out meals.

Would be really grateful of any suggestions or locations that tend to have decent places. Thanks

We've tended to eat in local restaurants in villages in France usually a set menu about 7-8 euros including wine. But we tend to avoid touristy areas. If you get chance go and to the Les machines in nante totally nuts.

Those are exactly the type of places we're trying (and failing) to find. There are a lot of tourists, French, Dutch and some English.

There must be some villages in the Vendee with decent restaurants, just not managing to find them.

Whereabouts in the Vendee are you? Which town ?

I was there earlier this year - near to Fontenay Le Comte.

Had a couple of lovely meals - one was quite pricey, but worth it as an adults only evening out. Had a memorable lunch in Maillezais (by the embarkment forthe boats on the Venise Verte). That was a 3 course for 9 or 10 Euros lunch. Was very nice indeed.

Found one or two in most villages away from the tourists.

So we're near to La Roche Sur Yon - is that the most touristy part?

We're with DC who are running around so much that we don't have much leeway time-wise to hunt for places. Oh for the days of wandering wth DH until we find somewhere that looks decent, there is certainly more urgency these days...!

the mussel/shrimp places are pretty amazing (around noirmutir) but they are more snack places than restaurants.
there is a buffalo grill (decent bbq&fries) in olonne sur mer.
ask in the local bakeries about small eateries, often long table kind of places with a very limited menu.

There is a great creperie on Lac du Jaunnay (sp?) and the lake is lovely to walk around. Also have eaten at the restaurant in the centre of Apremont which is another good place to go for the day - has a lake too with a beach
