Pushchair for just turned 4 year old for summer hols ?

We are off to Majorca in the summer. Dd1 will just turn 4 & although she is pretty good at walking, I think we might struggle if we don't have one on hols.

I'm thinking evening strolls/days out.

Will have DD2 who will almost be 1, so will have something for her & therefore somewhere to store all our junk !

Am I being namby pamby ? (Just recall my friend saying they didn't go anywhere in the evenings other than the hotel entertainment because their almost 5 year old didn't want to walk anywhere)

Our pushchair broke when DD2 was 2 and a half - I just never replaced it. Now just 4, she's a great walker.

Bite the bullet - don't do it.

Think its a very personal choice relating to your own child. If she'll walk everywhere and not whinge then great - no buggy. If you think lots of walking is on the cards or if you plan on going out at night and want somewhere for her to nap then go for it. Also have found that in hot weather many chn want a daytime nap too... Would a 'seat to go' help? Can't do a link but they can be put on the back of a buggy so a toddler can sit down for a rest...

hi where are you going in majorca?..i have a contact of a firm who hire out equiptment inc buggys in palma nova/magaluf?..very cheapy compared to buying and carting it on plane!

Welll I am debating whether to take a pushchair for DD who will be 3.3 when we go on holiday. She will definitely not be having one the year after.

When DS was 3.3, DD was newborn and so we decided to do the pushchair (travel system that could lay flat or sit up) and put the sling in the tray. Ds only went in the pushchair once - at the Eden project on a hot day. And DD didn't go in it much. We pretty much had me with DD in sling, and DH with rucksack of stuff. Much easier for going on the beach or negotiating the narrow streets of St Ives.

I think that maybe letting DD1 go in DD2's pushchair when she is really tired would be my preferred option.

my dd will be 4 when we go to cyprus in aug, but this time im taking our buggy as our flight is 10.50 and shell be shatterd poor lamb!

nailpolish · 23/01/2007 15:28

omg

i didnt use a buggy for either dd after the age of 2

hate the damn things

Bozza · 23/01/2007 16:26

Ah you see I have got good flight times - mid morning going and mid afternoon coming back. And if I did take a pushchair I would check it in. I wouldn't want DD in it in the airport, I would want her running around letting off steam.

Blandmum · 23/01/2007 16:29

Mine ditched the bugg at about 3.

A four year old should be able to walk.

Start now so you don't get the hassle on hoiday

beckybrastraps · 23/01/2007 16:35

Actually, I have some sympathy with the idea of taking a buggy. My two will sleep anywhere. We took two pushchairs when ds was 3.5 and dd was one. We would go out for dinner, they would eat, and then fall asleep in the pushchairs and we would push them back to our room. It meant we could all enjoy our evenings without one of us baby sitting, or the children staying up late and being ratty. We only used it for the 3.5 year old when he was sleeping.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 23/01/2007 17:10

well dd is never in her buggy, i use it for mindees' the reason i want it on hol is flight time and if she is tired when we are out late so we dont have to carry her back to hotl, she can sit comfy in there

Mojomummy · 23/01/2007 19:11

thanks for all your advice.

Just to make it clear, she does walk very well. She's not lazy, she's not fat & she doesn't go in the buggy at all.

However, we don't notmally walk up & down the promenade for a couple of hours each night ! I would like to do this on our holiday, maybe every other night or so.

We are off to Puerto Pollensa, so will try to find out if there is an option of renting out there.

The details of the rental in Palma would be good.

Also have a hippyseat, so will think about taking that.

If I just had DD1 I would be posting something similar to the "let them walk" brigade. However, after having a (healthy, fit and slim_ DD2 who needs her sleep early eve and feels like a dead weight to carry for more than a minute - I have changed my mind totally. DD1 stopped using a buggy at 2 and a half - happily, she loved the freedom of walking. DD2 walks everywhere too - until 6pm! Anything after that requires a fork lift truck! For such a petite sweetie, she can?t be carried when asleep - bad for anyone?s back.
I would get a buggy and keep it for eves only

StrawberrySnowflakes · 23/01/2007 19:29

tassis · 23/01/2007 19:36

mojomummy - to answer your opening question I'd recommend a maclaren quest. Ds is 4 in April and is pretty average sized (probably a bit taller than most) and he still fits in his nicely...

...and yes he can walk, but if I want to dander round the shops for any length of time it's a whole lot easier with him in the stroller!

I'd say take one!

noonar · 27/01/2007 18:08

my dds were aged 3 y 5 mo and 1yr when we went to france. we had a buggy board and maclaren type buggy. as the mother of a lazy walker- dd1 is now nearly 5- i think its way too old to be buying one just for your dds use. its somehow a bit diff if she jumps in her sisters buggy for a bit if she's really tired. how about a back carrier for dd2, so if you're walking very far, dd1 could go in the buggy for a bit?

noonar · 27/01/2007 18:11

ps my nearly 5 yr old would still jump in the back of the phil and teds, given half the chance! we used to use the extra seat to put shopping in, but she nags to get in, so we dont use it any more.

sorkycake · 27/01/2007 18:13

We take our hippychick seat in the luggage in case it's needed, Dh carries but I'll be honest I think 3yo's should walk everywhere, but I'm mean
