The cafe is in the Great Court. Actually it's not really a cafe as such, just an outlet selling pleasant but overpriced food and drink which you are then free to take to one of the long tables to eat. AFAIK there's no prohibition against taking your own food in -- I tend to buy myself an overpriced cappucino and the designer retail outlet and then feed the children squashed homemade sarnies and bottled tapwater.

Ground floor of the Great Court is open plan with serving areas for cafe and some shopping in the middle. Tables are round the perimeter. I'm not sure whether you could just sit down and eat all your own food there, but you could probably order a coffee and give 3yo his/her own food/drink. It is rather vast and sound travels so whinging may be amplified!

All London museum cafes are full of wailing kids. It goes with the territory.

Lio · 20/01/2007 19:28

ah thanks for that everyone, I think there is deffo a compromise to be made - home made stuff I know he will eat and overpriced treats for us

Haven't been for years but it gets a lot of mentions in the 'Days out recommendations' bit of MN.

have posted there aswell, wouldnt mind its free to get in but we have still have to pay £10

Lio · 22/01/2007 09:37

Update: great court was fab meeting place for toddlers and younger, but museum not good for us for a few years yet.

wurlywurly, I suggest you talk to the teacher if you need convincing about the trip - I'm sure s/he is teaching a particular topic that will benefit from a trip to the museum, and if money is a problem they might have a contingency fund. I know that the school trips I went on were great fun and stick in the memory more than lots of the classroom teaching.

How old is your ds wurlywurly?
Ds is 7 and he and his class had a fantastic time there last term. They were doing the Greeks, which meant a priceless opportunity to spot willies on vases
