Hotel rooms/suites for a family of 5 or airbnb in New York?

Next Easter I will be in New York for 6 days with my husband and 3 dds. The youngest will be 5 and eldest 9. I don't want 2 hotel rooms if we can avoid it as I wouldn't feel comfortable with dds in a separate room so dh and I would have to split between the rooms which isn't ideal. We need a family room/suite or maybe airbnb (but that is a new thing for me so any tips welcomed). Thank you

Be careful with Airbnb in New York: rentals of less than 30 days are nearly always illegal as they have quite strict laws there on that sort of thing. There's a lot of information about this on the NYC forum on TripAdvisor. Lots of people still stay in them (I've known several, and they have all been fine) but there is a risk of being scammed, or of the city closing the rental down and you ending up with nowhere to stay.

DH and I stayed at the Affinia Dumont last year: it was really nice and all the rooms have kitchens. I think they (or one of the other hotels in the Affinia Group) would have rooms to accommodate 5. If you post what you are looking for and a budget (in US $) on the TripAdvisor forum you'll get loads of recommendations there.

My favorite place to stay in NYC is The Alg

Woops!

My favorite place to stay in NYC is The Algonquin, in Manhattan within reasonable walking distance of Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Grand Central Station.

The hotel has a few lovely suites, with a bedroom which has a large bed, a living room with a fold-out couch, and I bet they could add a rollaway bed, or alternatively you could reserve another room attached to the suite.

It is not cheap, but the hotel is really historic, and the staff are excellent.

There is a diner right down the block for easy eating. I never dined at the hotel as the restaurant there did not appeal to me for some reason.

Do not use Airbnb or any such apartment rental site; short term rentals in NYC are illegal. Such sites also do not check the veracity of listings and there are many scams.

Look at a suite based hotel chain instead; Homewood Suites, Staybridge suites etc.

agree with Attila. if you book something it could well be a scam. don't risk it and book an apart hotel type place.

Thank you - you've confirmed what I thought re airbnb but people keep mentioning it in rl. I will avoid.

Sorry, meant to say, we booked our whole trip through this travel agent which is a UK based USA specialist, with all the various protection ATOL etc.

Thank you. We have flights booked as we're doing a few but have family accommodation in the other places so NY is the only one we need to pay for and sort.
