Have you taken your practical driving test without a instructor recently?

One of DH's students has a Chilean driving licence that he needs to exchange for a British one. He is not going to be here for more than a few months more, and basically needs the licence to hire a car for a trip.

Question is, he has taken a mock driving test with a driving school and acording to his instructor he's ready for the test but the intructor doesn't have an available date for the test until after the time he was planning his trip for, while the local driving test facility has availability for next week and he is thinking of having a go at it before forgetting about the trip. He has rung other driving instructors but all of them insist in paying for yet another no-need-for lesson before comiting to a test...

So the question is, if you have everything the testing centre requires from the car but the mirror for the examiner, where can you get that mirror? or how bad an idea is it to go and be tested without using a driving school car?

I took my test in our car in June without an instructor present - it was fine. The mirror, I think, came from Halfords - they're not hard to get hold of anyway.

Right from what I remember 6 years ago..

You can sit your test without having to go through an instructor, but I'm not sure whether your friend reaslises that the test centre dont supply cars.. you would need to have your own, which I am presuming he doesnt have.. also need to prove insurance, and obviously have someone with him to drive to and from the centre.. the mirrors can be purchased from Halfords or the like, and are really cheap, a few pounds at the most, as a lot of people who learn in there own cars have them for the aid of the person who is instructing them.
