Term time holiday

I'm looking at holidays for next year. Ds will be in year 2 I'm aware they have sats then. Term time holidays are £600 cheaper tho, if we took him out of school it would only be for 4 days as I'd do it around a bank holiday to minimise time away from school. Aibu to take him out tho even if it is for 4 days???

OP was talking about the May Bank Holiday week, with a year 2 child, and that's right on top of SATs. Bad choice.

As she can't go in June/July (when it might be a bit demob happy, depending on the school) then ruling it out for this year seems like a good idea. And all the appeals etc might have provided the sought-for clarification.

For this year, the answer might be to find a cheaper holiday you can do in half term (or some other non-term time when your DH can get leave). What do you like to do on holiday, other than be together?

All we want from a holiday is things for the children to do I.e zoo, bike hire. I'm looking at hotels instead as they charge the same all year and if done early enough you can get quite cheaply. Thank you for everyone's replays Smile

I think the government need to be sorting out the holiday company's not increasing the fines to parents. I could not agree more!

The government's failure to regulate the holiday companies has caused great animosity between parents and schools (even though schools don't apply fines, LEAs do) which is such a shame as both parents and schools want the same thing - what's best for the children (and fairly priced holidays!) What the government wants is a mystery...

How can the government dictate what holiday companies charge?

You can still go away abroad in the school holidays but you have to perhaps forgo a package holiday for a camping holiday, there are ways and means of having cheaper holidays in the sun

LockedOutOfMN · 19/07/2016 19:56

ivykaty44 By saying, for example, that holidays can't be more than 120% of their rest of year price during the school holidays. They can't dictate the costs but they can regulate the price fluctuations, as they do in other industries.

How would you get the uk government to regulate hotel prices in Spain or the middle east? Do you really think that the uk government would be able to regulate this?

Doubledecker22 · 21/07/2016 18:15

I wasn't talking about going abroad, we holiday in the uk

Don't be daft. The government can't stop holiday companies charging more in the holidays. It's called supply and demand. Holiday companies are businesses. They exist to make money. Holidays are a luxury.

It was simply a suggestion that something could be done to stop company's in the U.K. Doubling the cost of a holiday just because the schools are on holiday. Maybe not in the summer as that is peak season but Easter, may, October maybe they could. I appreciate some company's put on extra entertainment/activities for the holidays but some will literally charge you double for accommodation only which I do not think is fair
