Chicken pox today. Flights to Spain Saturday.

So DS2 came home from nursery on Monday with what looked like a couple of small bites in his groin. Today he has what is clearly chicken pox. We have flights booked for a family holiday with friends to Spain dept Sat am

Obvs I won't be taking him on a plane while he's infectious - ethically wrong. BUT, any thoughts on what the effing Jeff we do? Options seem to be;

  • DH and DS1 go and I suck it up, stay home with DS2 and 7mo DD. Try to get insurance to pay out (we only booked it yesterday. Will they think we're on the take?)
  • DH and DS1 go with friends to villa on Sat. I negotiate with Ryanair to move the flights and try to get a 'fit to fly' certificate from the GP. Assume he'll be 'clean' by Weds next week. Has anyone done this?

Any thoughts?

if you can get insurance to agree then I would cancel the whole trip and go again when you are certain everyone is pox free. I would leave it till Friday though to speak to the insurance as it does look suspect otherwise.

As an aside I had my DS vaccinated against CP last summer. Surprised people are finding it hard to find somewhere offering it. I got his done at a branch of Nomad (who specialize in vacinnations for travelling but also offer CP). He had his 4 weeks apart (£60 per jab).

We got to the airport the night before the flight and it was apparent that DC1 had chickenpox. We had to go to the paramedic at the airport 1st thing in the morning and he referred us to the local hospital. They then referred us to a GP(!) and we got a letter saying DC1 had chickenpox. Our friends went on the holiday without us. We got 95% of the cost of our holiday back from the insurers.
Another of your children could come down with the chickenpox so if I was you I would all stay at home and claim it on the insurance.

Re the insurance - there would be no reason for you to book a trip you didn't plan to take, especially at this late notice - so tell them that! You'll need a doctor certificate confirming the illness.

Sorry about your trip - very disappointing.

NickNacks · 25/05/2016 22:22

I think the insurance was booked late, not the holiday. So they are worried the insurers might think the policy was only booked because they needed to make a claim.

Ah.

Hersetta427 · 26/05/2016 10:45

Martha - yes that's them.

Any luck with the insurance OP?

BusyCee · 26/05/2016 16:38

He's still developing spots and is actually feeling very unwell today. Poor little item.

Have checked Ryanair pox protocol and they require a drs 'fit to fly' cert and 7days after the last spot appears (however you police that). Step 1 is to see GP tomorrow and get some advice. I'm also going to see if we could move flights rather than claim on insurance. Either way it looks as though we're deffo not flying on Sat....

That's a shame, I hope he feels better soon and that you can change the flights ok.

BusyCee · 27/05/2016 16:12

Dr confirmed he's not fit to fly. There aren't any other flights this week that would allow us to see GP to get a fit to fly cert and then arrive with a sensible amount of holiday remaining. So we've cancelled and I've opened a claim with the insurers.

Hey ho, eh?

Oh bugger! I hope the insurance is ok.

uhoh1973 · 27/05/2016 20:25

It's a bummer but not as bad as getting there and then the chickenpox hitting! our insurer told me that if we had had the chickenpox whilst on holiday only 1 parent would have been allowed to stay and the other parent would have to have flown home on the original planned flight. Not much fun to be stuck in a hotel room for an extra week with an unhappy child on your own!!

Sorry about your trip. Hope the claim is no trouble.
