We are going to Floridain August, Ia m about to book everything, our plan was a week disney and then a more relaxed week with a beach. Having read mumsnet enthusing about Sanibel I was thinking of going there but dp has watched a programme on one of the disovery channels about residents living in fear of a super alligator which is stomping about the island killing anything in sight and he also said the island just seemed to be a marshy swampy mess with no beach.PLease tell me he isn;t right.

But i am just imagining my 9 hour flight with him nagging me all the way about alligators and how we are going to return on crutches looking like war refugees.

The beaches are nice aren't they?

Any other recomendations

There's not much to do on Sanibel. Expensive everything. Take a look at Clearwater or St Petes or Treasure Island (we like the boardwalk area here).

expatinscotland · 15/01/2007 09:09

huh? i've been to sanibel three times and never even SAW an alligator except in a nature reserve.

what's to do in sanibel?

hang out on the beach w/rum punch and a book and get a tan.

SecondhandRose · 15/01/2007 09:12

If it is any help, you have to run in a zig zag fashion if one chases you as apparently they can't see you too well if you do that. If there was a rogue alligator on Sanibel it would have been shot by now, surely?

twinsetandpearls · 15/01/2007 09:19

expat that is exaclty what we are looking for.

Secondhandrose I will check those out and tell dp to practise running in a zig zag fashion

Hi,
We had a fab time on Anna Maria Island, beach to die for on our doorstep, very laid back, quite unspoilt and not an alligator in sight, highly recommend it!

expatinscotland · 09/02/2007 22:15

Great eye candy there when all the heavenly bods come out to go running on the beach and play beach volleyball.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/02/2007 13:07

You want Anna Maria island. When I lived in Florida its the beach I spent most of my time at. Its paradise. Thats a local tip. Don't waste your time with Sanibel.

triplets · 11/02/2007 19:33

Here here! We had the most fabulous time and dream of going back one day, just perfect!

meadow6 · 23/03/2007 12:42

where should we stay on anna maria. Any recommendations? We have 3 kids.

I'm a FL native, and it will be very hot and humid in August, but you'll be fine. It's FL and gators live there so you might see some, but they do not hang out on the beaches since they are freshwater animals. (FL does have crocs in the Everglades, but you're not going there I don't think.) However, do be alert when walking around lakes and freshwater, but you will probably be fine.

As for beaches, it depends what your idea of the perfect beach is. Sanibel, Captiva and Naples are wonderful, quiet and relaxing beaches. They are not 'marshy swampy mess' . We natives used to tell 'foreigners'...this meant anybody but a FL native...that they were awful to keep them quiet, but the secret has long been out.

meadow 6....it's America...don't worry about the kids...Depending on their ages, you might want a suite, mini-suite or just a double room with a 'loveseat' or 'sofa' that turns into a bed. In the US, they don't have family rooms....almost every place accepts kids. You'll just need to tell them, 2 adults, 3 children and they'll help. Have fun!

Clearwater, St. Pete, Ft. Pierce, etc., are commercialized with amenities, but depends on what you are looking for. The best party beaches are Miami Beach,Cocoa Beach and Daytona. They're all great....just different.

Remember the Gulf (west)has calm waters (when there's not a storm approaching of course), but the Atlantic (east) coast has real waves for some surfing, body surfing, etc. Sanibel and Captiva good for windsurfing.

I would love to stay in a cottage so was wondering if anyone had one or even an area to recommend.
Been checking out websites but there is an abundance of accomodation which is great but
just trying to narrow it down a bit.

knakered · 26/03/2007 23:40

...expatinscot or anyone else ...we are thinking of going for Dec/jan ...how warm will it be?...worried that it wont be awrm enough for the children to swim in the sea/pool?..dont want it to be boiling but at least warm ...
