hi, we are thinking of a holiday around may time to somewhere like greece. DS will be 8 months. how easy is it to fly with a baby, do you need to take them in thier car seat on the plane? what about food? we would go sc anyway but what is the baby food like? any tips for a hassle free holiday?

I took ds to Spain at 8 months old. On the plane he sat on my knee with a baby seatbelt on.

Top tips - if at all possible fly at a time when they'll sleep - we had evening flights which sounded awful at first, but I just took his bottle of milk, warmed it up as we were about to board, let him drink it as we were taking off (good to avoid any ear problems too) and then he slept the whole way while I read a magazine. Bliss!

Failing that always have favourite toys on hand and put them under the seat in front - not in the overhead lockers where you can't get at them quickly!

Take LOADS of nappies - you'll go through more than you think, especially if they drink more in the hot weather like my ds did. Couldn't find good quality nappies anywhere.

I also took some baby food and jars of puddings that I know he likes. Hard to understand the foreign labels on baby food sometimes! Trying to decipher pictures on jars in a chemist in Spain was no fun!!

Ideally get your ds eating things before you go that you may easily be able to get hold of in restaurants like jacket potatoes with cheese or soup and bread.

If your ds is anything like mine just find a place with a baby friendly pool and everyone's happy! We couldn't get him out!!

Have a great time

p.s. they let you keep the baby in his pram right up until the minute you board the plane so you just put the pram down at the last minute, leave it by the steps when you board, and then it's waiting for you when you get off (...in theory )

Unless you are going to hire a car over there and can't be sure they they will have an adequate car seat, I wouldn't bother taking yours. We always use a well known reputable car hire company and have had no problems with the baby seats they provide.
