swimming pool with 11 week old? thoughts?

Ok, so I'm taking my DD who's 11 weeks old to Tenerife...and during one of the night feeds it occurred to me...is it ok for her to go in the pool?!?! Thoughts please ladies...

No. not unless she has had all of the jabs. you have no idea how effective their disinfection systems are and you have no idea what chemicals they are using. 6 months no problem but this is just too small and has no benefit for the child.

No I wouldn't she only 11 weeks pools abroad are not as clean as the ones in uk pluss it would be far to cold . Maybe at
6months would be safer then I wouldn't let the water get into the mouth ears as risk of infection.

Babies of this age don't handle fluctuations in temperature very well at all.... They'll be in for 10 mins and come out all shivery. Better save your pool time for baby nap time, pop the sleeping baby in a shady poolside spot in the buggy and have a dip yourself. (While watching the baby obv)

Loads of baby wetsuits and body wrap things out there OP, mummymeister is wrong as well as rather patronising to mouldy. Look at Splash About ones in particular.

Has she been swimming before in the UK? Might be worth trying here first if not as she might hate it and scream so no point in paying out for a wetsuit. You should be able to get the Little Swimmers nappies small enough but you might need to look online as supermarkets can be a bit hit and miss.

Having not had all of her jabs wouldn't concern me.

I took DS in the pool in lanzarote when he was 16 weeks-ish.
He had the baby wrap in Mavis's link. I had been taking him for swimming lessons (well, you know, splashing about, meeting other mummies type swimming lessons ) since he was about 8 weeks so we had it for that.
He was absolutely fine, he enjoyed it, but we didn't keep him in too long as it was a bit chillier than he was used to.

Think my baby wetsuits were from jo jo maman. They don't have arms and legs they just keep the core warm. Lots of places sell them.

You can also get a swim sling, if you have older kids who are determined to be in the pool and you need to stay in longer with the baby, then they have the benefit of your body heat. I used something like this

Get a neo nappy (look on Amazon) and use it over the top of a disposable swim nappy - it has good cuffs round the easiest and legs and is designed to prevent leakage!

We've had great success with baby wetsuits - my only note of caution is to avoid one that fastens up the side with Velcro - I found it rubbed under DS's arm a bit, though I think it concerned me more than it did him IYSWIM.

Ooh, try Two Bare Feet as well, they do proper zip up ones with arms and legs.

As long as the pool is warm enough and I wouldn't expect to stay in long.
We took DS at 6wks and he was fine but it was only for a short time and a very warm hotel pool. We kept towel very close on side so we could come straight out and get warm, we then rinsed off in warm shower and got dry quickly. Would also be careful of sun exposure on tiny skin.
Btw he loved it.

pigeonpost I was not being patronising at all! I was genuinely interested as to where you would find a wetsuit for a baby of that age. I have heard of the slings and things and the baby nappies (proper swim nappies) but not a wetsuit. honestly, talk about taking offence easily....

this will be a really useful thread to link to in future as their are often parents with very little ones asking about this (for uk as well as holidays abroad)

I don't think the advice is to wait until after jabs anymore. See the NHS advice here.

When my dd was a baby, someone pointed out to me that none of the things they were immunised against were water-borne, so keeping them out if a pool until they'd had their jabs was pointless.
