Thanks
I'm taking myself and two DC on holiday .
We have 10kg hand luggage per person .
Optional extra is hold nav with weight limit of 15kg and this will be charged at £26 per bag EACH WAY !
So that's £52 each x 3 £ 156 for our bags ?
Do we all need hold bags ?
Thanks

I may go against the trend but I just can't travel just with handluggage and while I use the washing machine when self catering it is normally for stuff like underwear and T-shirts.

We don't live in swimwear, I need a fresh shirt and underwear each evening, I hate clothes drenched in sweat and sunloation. Grrr.

I love to relax on holiday and not think about saving on clothes.

Plus with camera, two ipad, kindles and books/toys for DD one backbag alone is filled up just with this.

snowypenguin · 11/02/2016 12:49

I am with you nora. I wouldn't travel with just hand luggage. DS couldn't manage anyways as he usually gets ketchup down a t-shirt within about 30 second and I am on holiday so certainly not washing anything!

I like properly clean clothes. Not stuff stinking of sweat and suncream!

see my issue is lugging all the luggage around if it's not just handluggage. We usually do the type of holidays where we stay in a few hotels and move along the coast or around a lake or city so we would have to repack a whole case every other day otherwise. Hence I would rather rinse a 4 year olds tshirt if needed than carry loads. Also we travel on large planes, small planes, trains, car, bikes etc all in one 2 week trip sometimes so trying to drag large cases up stairs and store somewhere would do my nut in

Actually when we go to some locations there is a max of 10kg luggage that has to fit under seat as no other storage ( small boats/ seaplanes/ local planes)

If you travel as the only adult also with two small children alone you need hands free to carry child/ hold hands also rather than extra pants

I would recommend taking one hold bag. The liquids tips the balance for me.

As others have said, if it's a hot weather holiday you will need several bottles of suncream (at least 6 - if you use less, are in swimwear a lot and are pale skinned you aren't using enough).

I buy Aldi or Asda suncream here for £2/3 a bottle - it is usually at least 3 times the price abroad and I'd rather pay for one bag than traipse around on holiday looking for reasonably priced suncream.

I often spend about a month on the beach and don't wear that much sunscreen. With DS and pale skin.
If you put factor 50 it does last a long time and if you aren't in the beach during lunch time (not really recommended anyway), then you won't need that much.
4 people for 10 days, with factor 50, 2 bottles maximum.

Artandco · 12/02/2016 15:41

Yes 6 bottles is extreme for one week. We avoid the midday sun anyway (11-4pm most days), so one application before 11am and after 4pm should be sufficient

BarbaraofSeville · 12/02/2016 15:48

The OP is going to Spain for 10 days. It's only 2 bottles each for the duration and if they are out in the daytime and in and out of water, it will need reapplying several times.

Lweji · 12/02/2016 15:54

No it doesn't. It's over doing it.

Well I'd rather not get skin cancer lweji. 2 bottles for 10 days is not enough ever.

dementedpixie · 12/02/2016 16:41

It's supposed to be applied several times a day and after towelling and being in water (35mls an application). We take loads of bottles so 2 bottles is not enough

dementedpixie · 12/02/2016 16:43

And higher factors should not be taken to mean you can spend all day in the sun. They still need reapplied to maintain that factor

specialsubject · 12/02/2016 17:02

much easier and more reliable to cover up. Kids should be wearing rash vests and board shorts, or the all-in-one suits that you get for little ones. Same for adults. Suncream on before going out in the morning and reapplied after swimming/towelling. That's why clothes are much easier!

peak UV in late June but still plenty in the summer holidays.

deliberate sunbathing makes leather handbags. Sometimes cancerous ones.

Artandco · 12/02/2016 18:24

Mine wouldn't be in the sun all day though. They get suncream on hands and faces, then long linen clothing and floppy hats if out in the sun during peak hours. Otherwise stay in shade and do like everyone else in those countries of long afternoon naps and staying up late in evening when sun has cooled down. Full suncream just if in pool or sea, but we wouldn't every take them in pool or sea between 11-4pm anyway.
Midday swim in most hot countries would be asking for trouble tbh even with sun cream on. Do as locals as you can't go too wrong

Lweji · 12/02/2016 18:51

Do as locals as you can't go too wrong
This.
One of the locals here.

snowypenguin · 12/02/2016 20:06

Yeah and I lived in Australia so I know the dangers and how much sun cream to use.

Lweji · 12/02/2016 20:18

But Australia is much more at risk due to the hole in the ozone layer.

Livelifefortoday · 12/02/2016 20:32

I would personally travel with hold luggage, just peace of mind that I can take everything I need for the family before we go and have a few things spare. We recently flew with easy jet and were a few kilos over the weight allowance. This would have resulted in a charge of £10 per kilo had we not moved some items into our hand luggage! They were strict on the weight allowances. Enjoy your holiday...

N3wYear2016 · 12/02/2016 23:57

I travel with less than 10 kg hand luggage to hot & cold destinations

The 2kg remaining means that you can bring presents or souvenirs on the journey back

Wear the heaviest clothes and shoes, hat, fill pockets

Pack clothes that are made of material that does not crease

Zip off clothes that are 2 in one eg trousers, skirts

If you are staying in a hotel they normally provide toiletries and towels
If you want to take a towel suggest a mini micro fibre ones, that you find in camping shop
or
A wrap that doubles as a towel, swim cover up, evening wrap

If it is a hot country you can hand wash or machine wash using soap leaves eg
www.traveloutdoors.co.uk/highlander-active-wash/

Anything you feel you need you can usually buy at your destination (unless you are travelling way off the beaten track)

Some airlines charge you for 10 kg if you are just over the limit, so pack wisely !

rookiemere · 13/02/2016 17:24

I think there are two different types of holiday goers.

I view a holiday as one of those rare opportunities to give my extensive summer wardrobe an airing well those pieces that still fit me.

Whilst I don't want to spend a fortune on luggage, I would really struggle to fit everything I need for a week in hand luggage. I've done it for mini-breaks and it's fine for 3-4 days but more than that and I'd like a little bit of variety. I also don't particularly want to spend my holidays bent over a sink, hand washing my undies, although I'm happy to avail myself of a washing machine if we're self catering.

Toffeelatteplease · 18/02/2016 20:15

Oh dear Lord I have just travelled hold luggage with easyjet.

We were ok because we had special assistance (we've done cabin luggage only but it is pretty difficult with a wheelchair) but the bag drop queues were extrodinary!!! No way given the choice I would be travelling hold luggage!!!
