This is Virgin's advise:

Carrying liquids and gels inside hand baggage is prohibited or restricted at some airports. Make sure you check the rules for each airport you are departing from as they may vary. All cabin baggage will be screened at a central security area before the aircraft boarding gates.

Many airports including those in the UK and US require passengers to remove their shoes and heavy outdoor clothing so they may be x-rayed with their carry-on bags.

In all airports passengers are not allowed to carry potentially dangerous articles such as sharp items, flammable materials, poisons, radioactive materials, ammunition and firearms in their carry on baggage.

It is important however that you pack valuable or fragile items such as jewellery, keys, money/credit cards, cameras, laptops and other personal electrical items in your cabin baggage allowance and keep it with you at all times. If you decide to pack them in your checked in baggage you should have them adequately insured as our liability for damage to these items is strictly limited.

the following items CANNOT be carried in your hand baggage:

Toy or replica guns (plastic or metal)
Catapults
Household cutlery
Knives with blades (of any length)
Paper knives
Razor blades
Darts
Scissors *
Sporting bats
Billiard, snooker, pool cues
Cigarette lighters including butane, absorbed-fuel (Zippo-type), electric/battery-powered and novelty lighters (for passengers travelling to and from the USA, Barbados and from India)
Matches (for passengers travelling to and from Caribbean) **
Hypodermic syringes
Tradesmen's tools *
When departing DEL/BOM the Indian authorities will not allow pungent spices, fruit, loose or spare batteries, including 1.5 volt pen light cells, to be carried in the aircraft cabin

  • Scissors with blunt/round-ended blades (metal or plastic) less than 6cms in length or scissors with metal blades and pointed tips under 3cms are permitted. US airports will allow metal scissors with pointed tips and a cutting edge four inches or less, as measured from the fulcrum. US airports will also allow metal scissors with blunt tips, plastic scissors and ostomy scissors.

** Safety matches are permitted in limited quantity to destinations outside the Caribbean.

* If you have a medical reason that means you need to inject during the flight you are permitted to carry syringes in the cabin. However, you must be able to produce medical evidence, such as a doctor?s letter when you check in or at security screening. The letter should be kept with you at all times. All medication must bear a label indicating the name of the medication and the person to whom it is prescribed.

US airports will allow screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and other tools, (except crowbars, drills, hammers, and saws) seven inches or less in length.

Limited quantities of medicines and toiletries that you need during the flight may be carried.

Please note: Security personnel are permitted to remove any article which in their reasonable opinion may be used or adapted for causing injury or incapacitation of any person.

For safety reasons, dangerous articles such as those listed below (list includes but is not limited to) must not be carried in your hand or checked baggage:

Cigarette lighters/matches (not permitted in hold baggage to any destination)
Compressed gases- deeply refrigerated, flammable, non-flammable and poisonous such as butane, oxygen, liquid nitrogen, aqualung cylinders
Corrosives such as acids, alkalis, mercury and wet cell batteries
Explosives - Fireworks, flares, sparklers or other explosives
Flammable liquids and solids such as lighter fuel, paints, thinner and firelighters
Radioactive materials
Briefcases and attache cases with installed alarm devices
Oxidising material such as bleaching powder, peroxides
Weapons such as disabling sprays e.g. tear gas, mace, pepper spray
Firearms and a limited quantity of ammunition may be carried subject to proper packaging but you must contact us in advance
Poisons and infectious substances such as insecticides, weed killers and live virus materials
Other dangerous articles such as magnetised material, offensive or irritating materials

Many of these listed articles can be carried as air cargo, provided they are packed in accordance with cargo regulations

Then you can take a 7-inch screwdriver in the cabin on a US plane? Why would anybody need to?

Are they completely nuts over there?

JanH · 27/12/2006 12:17
