Is it legal to take a pushchair in a black cab

Can you take a pushchair in a black cab? Would it have to be a special cab that can take wheelchairs? and do they actually strap the chair in or just let it rattle around?

you just wheel the chair in and apply brakes. i just got home that way!

it must be , have done this twice in the last 2 weeks !!

cadeauxbury · 20/12/2006 16:08

its fine - I do it every time I go to Brighton.

suzycreamcheese · 20/12/2006 16:12

yes! told me you have to have the brake on (pram!) I always hold it too just in case its a taximan wannabe michael schumacher driving..

NannyL · 20/12/2006 18:34

sure its legal..... but i cant imagine its very safe in the event of a car crash!

would probably end up killing the child!

Not a risk i personally would take!

Took black cabs recently with buggy in Central London. Held on and put brake on. Frankly would prefer to take chances in a slowmoving black cab in traffic than try and take buggy and child safely down into the depths of the Underground.

I used to do it when they were tiny but was told that a change in the law had made it illegal and no cab driver would take me with a pushchair with a child in it.

I have since become completely manic about car safety, for various reasons, and wouldn't put a child in a taxi without a proper car seat unless it was an emergency. I did take ds1 to A&E in a taxi with a seat belt on but no car seat (he's 4) because he had a burst eardrum bleeding and I didn't know what else to do - but I don't know how safe a child would be in a pushchair in the back of a cab - it doesn't feel safe.

I had to do it once about a year ago when crossing London from one station to another when travelling with DS by train - the tube stations didn;t have lifts, so I couldn;t see any otehr way of doing it...

I just put the brake on and held it.

I did ask the cabbie first if it was OK as I thought maybe they might refuse, but he was fine.

I'm pretty sure that black cab drivers are up on the law.

I've done this in the past and felt completely safe. I've also held onto the buggy as we've driven.

TheBlonde · 20/12/2006 18:57

I've done it - just holding onto the buggy
Moderately safe imho

AmyP · 20/12/2006 19:07

Thanks everyone. As daughter is one perhaps it would be better to put her on the seat with a seatbelt?

Newer cabs should have an integral child seat in the middle of the back seat
