Can we afford Italy?

We're looking at southern Italy for a holiday in May but I'm a bit concerned about the price of eating out. Places like Venice and Florence are supposed to be really pricey - but is that the same across the country? I want to know we can eat out most nights without breaking the bank. Any comments from someone who's been there would be appreciated!

Southern Italy is cheaper than Florence and Venice = neither of which you would want to visit in late May - too smelly!!!

Hmm lovely! That's interesting cos I was also thinking of Croatia and getting a ferry across to Venice. You've put me off!
Is it on a par with Greece? (which struck me as really cheap?)

I've only been to northern Italy (Milan and Bergamo) many years ago. I do, however, remember it being expensive to eat out (or more specifically drink out).

What sort of accomodation will you be in? Will you have the option of self-catering some nights?

PeachesMcLean · 19/12/2006 22:35

We do want self catering but I was only really thinking of breakfast and a few snacks. I don't mind cooking, it's the deciding what to prepare every night that I could do with a holiday from.

Consider Friuli, Peaches. We went at Easter last year and found it very cheap. I wouldn't recommend the accommodation we had (very dodgy DIY-build job...!) but it was cheap, and also cheap to eat out ('standard' fare, like pasta, pizzas and so on... I'm not talking swanky restaurants). From Friuli we went to Venice for the day twice. You can also get into the mountains (or at least the beginnings of them) from there (the Alpi Giulie/Julian Alps) and down to the coast (Grado is a nice seaside-y place). Trieste is an interesting city (go to Miramare) and I heartily recommend a visit to the mosaics in the basilica at Aquileia (sounds a bit limited in appeal, I know, but honestly, they are amazing!). We stayed in the area near Spilimbergo/San Daniele (famous for its ham).

Wherever you go in Italy you will be able to find food that doesn't break the bank. (Even in Florence and Venice, honestly.) Just avoid the obvious tourist traps and ask locals where they would go to eat.

If you stick to the idea of going to the south, I think you'll find it is a lot cheaper. (Sorry, I don't know the south as well.) But my advice would still be to talk to locals (e.g. if you are self-catering, the owners of the property you're renting) and ask them where they would recommend that is not too expensive.

Have you considered looking at agriturismi? These are places in the country which have accommodation (either on a B&B basis or basic self-catering) but which often also provide home-cooked food if you want it in the evenings (and possibly even packed lunches too). Again, my experience is in the North, but you'll find similar stuff in the south too.

Hold on... I've got an agriturismo site saved somewhere... I'll go and get you a link...

OK... This is the site I had for agriturismi, which might be useful.

Good luck!

To be honest JingEllBells that sounds like our kind of holiday - particularly the mosaics and the ham! I like the idea of being able to go to Venice so I'll check out Friuli - thanks for the tip. Had a look at the link too, which looks interesting if I can find a phrase book...
Thanks again.

Another area which is nice, if you want to be near to 'cultural stuff' but somewhere a bit quieter and cheaper is the northern part of the Veneto. Bassano del Grappa is lovely, for example.

Sorry about the Italian-language link. I forgot to check whether it had translations. If you type 'agriturismo + a place name' into your search engine you will get sites which are either in English or bilingual.

Have fun!
