BUGABOO OR CAR SEAT ON THE PLANE?

orangetrees · 19/12/2006 19:51

We are going to Italy and dont know whats best to carry on plane. Do we have to check in the car seat or can we have it with us until we arrive to the plane? If we have to check in, anyone experience about it? Do staff at the airport destroy it as they usually do with luggage?

You check it in as oversized lugggage and , packed in a box, we've not had problems with anything taken that way. Think it unlikely you'll be allowed it on board given current restrictions and presumably baby doesn't have a seat booked but you may be able to take it to the gate.

MerryPiffmas · 19/12/2006 19:58

I'd be VERY loathe to put an expensive puishchair in the luggage hold.
you are allowed car seats If you have paid for a seat otherwise nope. AFAIK

TheBlonde · 19/12/2006 19:59

It's pot luck with checked in car seats (unless packed as LIZS advises) - we have flown with ours but it was damaged on the latest flight

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 19/12/2006 20:00

bugaboo do carry bags now which are very padded apparently

orangetrees · 19/12/2006 20:05

yes, i was also thinking about the current restrictions...I've seen people taking the pushchair to the plane door lots of times, but bugaboo doesn't fold very well and I'm afraid they wont have the space where they normally put it.
Fairytale, you are right they do bags for travelling but they are reeeeallly expensive!

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 19/12/2006 20:09

You will be able to take it to the plane door
They put them in the luggage hold with everything else - don't worry about space

I take a maclaren on hols but use a bag.
The risk is that they don't bring it out when you land and you have to wait until baggage claim to get your buggy.

DeckthehallsLaDiDaDi · 19/12/2006 20:13

We put our quinny buzz in the hold this summer and their were no probs with it.

orangetrees · 19/12/2006 20:14

That would be great TheBlonde, I was just concerned because the Bugaboo doesnt fold as the maclaren.

orangetrees · 19/12/2006 20:15

Deck, you mean you took it to the plane door? (sorry but my english is awful )

Put the carseat in the hold and take a pushchair up to the gate. We had no problems with our pushchair on the way out but on arrival in Italy last year they wouldn't give it back to us - they sent it through to baggae pick up. grrr.

I would also advise buying yourself 5m of thin cotton fabric and learning how to tie a sling before you go so you can fold it up and put it in your hand bagage - then at least you have something to carry baby in at the other end. Wish I had - you don't realise how heavy they get...

orangetrees · 19/12/2006 20:31

yes, liquid, we are taking the sling too, she uses all the time anyway so she'll feel safe in there.
so the hold is the space over the seats where you put coats?

OP posts:
pooka · 19/12/2006 20:33

No the hold is the big bit under the plane. the lockers are above the seats.

orangetrees · 19/12/2006 20:39

Thanks pooka! This new vocabulary will be useful when we'll arrive at the airport! .
If we can bring the carseat (in the bugaboo chasis) that will be enough because we are going only for four days and will be mainly indoors...we can put the carseat in the chasis and leave the pushchair part at home.
Will they take chasis plus carseat at the plane door?

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 19/12/2006 22:20

I would expect them to take chassis plus seat at the plane door
Size doesn't matter to them it just needs to be a form of baby transport

laundrylover · 19/12/2006 22:33

We have flown quite a bit with carseats and buggies - always checked in carseats and taken the buggy to the door and then they put in the hold. However this summer both our carseats got left in Spain and went missing for a week!!! we also only ever take a cheap light weight buggy for same reason.
Could you maybe take just the carseat and sling, or buy a £20 buggy off the market? Bugaboos are very expensive methinks?

TuttiFrutti · 21/12/2006 13:17

We had this problem last summer, and ended up borrowing a very old cheapo Maclaren from a friend for the plane. It was excellent, really easy to fold for coach trips and took up no space in our hotel room.

We saw other people taking Bugaboos on our flight, so it can be done, but bear in mind some disadvantages:
they take up a lot of space in hotel rooms and on buses/taxis/public transport
you will worry about it getting trashed by the baggage handlers
they are not as easy to fold as cheap pushchairs
yes, you can buy a transport bag for it, but they cost £67!!!

Teejee · 22/12/2006 19:20

We are travelling to Dubai on Emirates and I have just bought Maclaren Quest as I have been told that one can take this on the plane as the stewards can fold and put it in the cupboard where as the bugaboo needs to be checked in with the luggage. Is this true?

TheBlonde · 22/12/2006 19:24

I have always found they stick them in the hold but maybe it's different on emirates

roneypony · 31/12/2006 16:25

We take cheaper pushchairs when we travel. I wouldnt risk my Bugaboo even with the travel bag

I do have a travel bag though and secondhand resale price is pretty much what they cost new so I dont feel it is wasted money, I wrap mine in it in my car to save it getting scratched

We tend to take maclaren buggies and graco citi sport for baby when we travel though as if these get ruined it's not too bad

TheBlonde · 31/12/2006 16:53

roneyponey - just spotted you on the doubles thread - how many buggies do you have?
