Looking for advice re budget family touring in the south of France and Italy.

I'm looking for accommodation ideas for a family of 4 adults and 2 teens who want to travel around the south of France and northern Italy by car.

Preferably staying in a different location each night, with one or two 2-night stays.

Thinking about camping. Pros: cheap! Cons: we would have to buy a tent, how long would it take to put up, take down each day, worries that it and all the necessary equipment we would need would not fit in our car.

Happy to camp in static cabins/caravans etc but don't seem able to rent those per night, only per week. Is it possible? We have done this before in Australia where you could rent cabins per night and it would probably suit us best if possible.

Budget hotels. Which are the cheapest? Also considered hostels - how viable is that option?

Has anyone does this sort of travelling as a family? How did you do it without spending ££££?

The cost has always been the dilemma every time we travel or we want to take on a tour. I suggest that you take your own car with you so that you can just go to places you want aside from avoiding too much spending. Moreover, you can ask the help of guidaly.com/guided-tours-of-italy.html and check if they provide cheap hotels or apartments that suit your budget without having your trip compromised. I haven’t tried them personally but they seem very good. Tell me about your experience if you decide to go with them!

B&B hotels (chain) are v cheap but clean and comfortable. They're perfect for an overnight stop. They do rooms for 4 so your kids could all share perhaps? There are loads of them in France.

I love camping but think pitching/ striking a tent every day/every other day would be v time consuming unless you really roughed it.

Although Eurocamp will let you book overnight stops, I'm sure they have to be in addition to at least one 3 night stay?
