First longhaul flight - advice/top tips?

Hello! Flying to Sydney in the spring and this is the first time I've flown further than Greece (well, I did go to Disneyland in Florida with my parents but it was over two decades ago and I don't really remember!)

So - silly questions, is there somewhere to charge phone/iPad on most longhaul flights? How about food - I know a meal is provided but I don't seem to have had a veggie option, so would you stock up on snacks from the airport after security?

I'm hopeless at sleeping when travelling - has anybody ever managed this?

Thank you in advance :)

Hi. Yes visa is needed! Glad someone has given you a link!

doitanyways · 06/01/2016 21:19

What do I need to obtain the visa? I can't believe I need one: it's only for 2 weeks!

You can apply online for an eVisitor visa that is free. A lot of places require a visa even for short stays - always better to check in advance

You don't need anything-just go through the online link with your travel dates and passport number. You will get stopped at the airport if you don't have one! A colleague made this mistake a few years ago.

Get a visa for free from Australian gov borders website- it can take a few days though ours came through within 24 hrs. Your travel agent will probably offer one but they charge.

I've just come back from oz with Singapore Airlines. I was dreading such a long journey but it was fine.

I took some relaxing music on my phone. Loads of food and drinks were provided on the flight. Movies too- though why are there always Jennifer Aniston films on long haul flights?!

I've heard Etihad are great too. Enjoy your holiday!

Has anyone flown with Thai airways long haul?
I'm loving those jet sleeper pillows but the thought of buying 4 is making me wince

NuggetofPurestGreen · 10/01/2016 19:51

Jesus lucky you asked on here you wouldn't have been let in without the evisitor thing! It's very simple though.

You can bring food through just not anything fresh/plant based/dairy. I.e. You can bring chocolate/crisps etc.

Yes pillows look good, ihatethecold, and I need four too - when are you travelling?

snowypenguin · 11/01/2016 11:25

I flew Thai about 4 years ago. Would fly with them again if going via London. I thought they were great. Good food and entertainment. Perth to London.

snowypenguin · 11/01/2016 11:26

I agree the pillows look good but expensive!

You can go to the airline's website and select 'manage your booking' to choose your seats and meal options.

I'm a regular on a London to Sydney flight. Buy a bottle of water if you'll drink it on the first leg. Going through the airport at Hong Kong and Dubai they don't make you go through security, but they do check for water and liquids again before boarding the next plane. I had my bottle taken off me both times I had one.

Don't over pack your hand luggage, you say you'll have problems sleeping-most people will nod off. I normally pack the following:

Cardi/wrap & fluffy socks

Travel pillow (I use their one for my lower back) & eye mask-I can recommend good ones if you'd like.

Small toiletries - mini deodorant, small shower gel (I like to freshen up,people smell weird on planes). Moisturiser. Toothpaste & toothbrush. Face wipes. I have loads of clarins minis so it's not too much effort for me to take these.

Minimum make up

Mobile phone & charger wire

Kindle

Headphones

Buy some snacks, but they feed you pretty regularly on that flight. You get to the point where you don't want anymore food.

I have a J Pillow and eye mask.

It's very good as has multiple ways you can use it depending on your position.

Have a change of clothes in your hand luggage - I learned the hard way (1st time long haul) after my luggage went awol for 3 days upon arriving in NZ. I had nothing, not even sun cream, and arrived on a Sunday when the whole town was shut. . I was pretty wiffy by the time I could buy clean clothes...

ihatethecold · 11/01/2016 18:51

Ooh the QVC pillow is quite a lot cheaper than the others I've googled.
