Recommendations for restaurants in London please

I wasn't sure whether to post this under "Food" or "Travel.

Anyway, I'm coming to the UK for the summer. While we're there I'm going to go stay with my sister in London for a couple of days, without the kids. I'm looking for recommendations for a really nice restaurant to take her to. Last year we went to the River Cafe and loved it. Can anyone recommend any other places where we can get a great meal and, just as importantly, enjoy a civilised child-free evening?

Thanks in advance.

Moro (Exmouth Market, near Farringdon station) is wonderful if you're into Spanish / Moroccan food.

littlemissbossy · 19/05/2004 15:24

Hi Kate. I'm not a Londoner, so can not give local London advice. I would however if in London, love to go to Jamie Oliver's restaurant, Fifteen. They have a website and you can reserve a table online www.fifteenrestaurant.com

Azure · 19/05/2004 15:44

Another good website is this
Squaremeal

CountessDracula · 19/05/2004 16:29

Where are you staying Kateandthegirls?

My fave restaurants

Club Gascon in Smithfield - sort of southern french tapas, lots of foie gras etc but many other superb things.

Putney Bridge - really nice if you can get a big round table overlooking the bridge. Nice french food, quite posh

MVH in Barnes - went there for the first time the other week and it is truly fab. Wicked really funky little bar upstairs and the food is great.

Canyon in Richmond - lovely on the river - can eat in the garden if weather good.

bettys · 19/05/2004 16:33

Can you just go to MVH for a drink? It looks a bit off-putting somehow.
(Sorry Kate-slight digression)

Soapbox · 19/05/2004 16:47

You could try linktoptable.co.uk\toptable{} which is an on-line booking service.

My favourites are:

Bleeding heart - french - just off Hatton Garden
Momo - moroccan - just off regents street
Christophers - posh american - very near the Aldwych
The Fifth Floor Restaurant - frenchish - Harvey Nichols.
Pont de la Tour and butlers wharf chop house - at butlers wharf - right on the river.

If I think of any more I will let you know!

crumpet · 19/05/2004 16:54

Hm, I have to say I thought the service at Canyon wasn't great the time I went - enough to stop me wanting to go again, but maybe it was a one-off.

Not been for a couple of years, but used to love the Oxo tower restaurant in the summer.

Second the recommendations for Moro and Putney Bridge

foxinsocks · 19/05/2004 17:07

I went to Glasshouse in Kew the other day and thought the food was fantastic. Some of the best food I've had in London for ages (I think it may have a Michelin star but could be wrong). Was quite expensive but still incredibly enjoyable and I would always go there for a 'special' meal. And there won't be any kids there

katierocket · 19/05/2004 17:18

192 in Notting Hill
small but lovely food and lots of opps for celeb spotting.

treacletart · 19/05/2004 17:59

My vote goes to The Admiralty in Somerset House. Pricey but just about perfect as far as food and service go and the walk across the sqaure to Somerset House or along the river is just lovely - It really adds to a sense of occasion

KateandtheGirls · 19/05/2004 18:03

Wow, thanks everyone for the suggestions.

My sister lives in Hammersmith, but we're willing to tube/taxi it.

I'll mention your suggestions to her and see if there are any she particularly likes the sound of too.

Soapbox, I actually went to the Butlers Wharf Chop House last year. An old boyfriend took me there for lunch. It was great!

the brackenbury is lovely is you want somewhere local and a gastropub - the angelsea arms?? if my memory serves me. dh went to somewhere dead posh in notting hill the other day, can't remember the name, I'll ask him

CountessDracula · 19/05/2004 18:26

Oh yes the Anglesea was good, haven't been for years.
Katierocket do you really think the food is good in 192 - last time I went there (in fact every time) I thought the food was pretty ropey!

Crumpet I agree about Canyon but if it's a nice day it is lovely to sit out in.

I like the Chiswick too. Sister to the Brackenbury I believe

Oh and the Phoenix in Putney is v good

bundle · 19/05/2004 18:31

do you mean this 192? it's shut

Azure · 19/05/2004 18:32

The Chiswick has now closed, unfortunately, but La Trompette in Chiswick is very nice.

katierocket · 19/05/2004 18:33

oh bloody hell, shows how much I know.
TBH it was about 3 years ago!

bundle · 19/05/2004 18:35

if you're feeling flushed, pied a terre is supposed to be fabulous

Azure · 19/05/2004 18:36

Wow, I'm amazed 192 has shut. E&O is nice - very much a place-to-be-seen-in (well, it was when I went there an age ago). If you like posh Italian, Zafferano and Locanda Locatelli have great food, although Locanda is slightly corporate in feel.

Azure · 19/05/2004 18:39

Oh, and for very expensive, you can't beat Gordon Ramsey in my book.

melsy · 19/05/2004 19:55

The Halkin Hotel in Belgravia here has a very amazing Thai restaurant called NAHM amd is run by a famous chef who has a book out. Its the kind of thai food that once youve eaten you cant go anywere else.

CountessDracula · 19/05/2004 19:59

I'm v sad the Chiswick has closed, we used to go there all the time when we lived there

maomao · 19/05/2004 20:05

Hullo KateandtheGirls, how are you?

What kind of food are you looking for? Anything in particular?
Here's a reliable site , but you have to do some digging, which you may not have time for.

maomao · 19/05/2004 20:08

Oh, and here's another site (requires less digging) !

Heathcliffscathy · 19/05/2004 20:16

agree about canyon service: appalling when we went, such a shame as lovely views.

chez bruce, v good local (wandsworth common), think is sister restaurant of la trompette???.
nobu, sublime, but v v v expensive
providores (marylebone high st): peter gordon of sugar club's new(ish) place...fantastic fusion food if that's your thing
we went to the phoenix in putney last night and loved it.

ooooh i love thinking about places to eat....
