advice sought for new travel system

Hello,

I am a first time mother, typically overwhelmed by the choice of travel systems...
we are still hesitating between 3 systems:

  • new safety first trendideal (with maxicosy car seat)
  • bebe confort loola (but I've seen your reviews and the break system seems to be a concern)
  • the mamas and papas pliko pramette (seems heavy to me!)

Before we make our final (first ?) decision, any last minute advice would be so welcome,
Many thanks and all the best.

Don't know about those 3, but i would recommend one with a base for the car seat which is fixed in the car - so you don't have to fiddle with the seat belt every time. (Mine was a graco.)

twickersmum · 14/12/2006 21:49

I don't know the first two, but don't go for the pliko pramette. i have two friends with one, neither are happy with it and have now gone for a phil & teds.
they found it heavy and bulky.

i think the maxi cosi is the best car seat, you can buy the base too or can use without. i loved having a base, just click click... no fiddling!

NannyL · 15/12/2006 18:57

go for the maxi cosy one... for the simple reason that the maxi cosi cabrio car seat is one of the safest seats you can buy...

i remeber recently the M&P 1st stage car seat did really badly in indepenadnt crash safety tests!

so if it were me i wouldn even think aboutputting my child in any seat otehr than the safets one for in the car.... and (aprt from isofix ones) the maxi cosi is the safest!

BigCookLittleCook · 15/12/2006 19:04

Also had two friends with M&P pramette, both of whom got very annoyed with it and wished they had not bought it. We have a Jané Slalom Pro travel system with matrix car seat (three wheeler), really happy with it (DS is now 10 months), but car seat confusing to fit. Would still highly recommend it.

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 15/12/2006 19:06

i would advise against a travel system, get a decent car seat which fit corectly in your car, and a nice pram/pushchair which lays flat.

NannyL · 15/12/2006 19:16

ultimatey i agree with fairy tale of new york too!

(having used loads of buggies / car seats and travel sustems as and when i have my own i personally will NOT get a trvale system!)

loads of people love them tho.... also i think most people end up with a travel system + anopther buggy

saying that i WOULD (If i had twins) get a jane power track twin travel system but not use the matrix car seat (very unsafe when lieing down but fine when used like a normal car seat) but would use the other jane normal car seat with it!)

i have a question about pramettes. do they lie completely flat as a proper carrycot on a pram would?

kiskidee · 31/12/2006 02:00

i keep saying if i ever had a second child it would be a car seat and a maclaren from birht.

GoodKingWestCountryLass · 31/12/2006 23:04

Agree with FTONY.

Had travel system and there is only so long you can lump baby around in the car seat. Also, both of mine outgrew the car seat before they were ready for the next stage seat. I ended up buying a Britax seat that can be rear and forward facing.

misdee · 31/12/2006 23:05

yes pramettes lie completely flat.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 01/01/2007 00:39

same here. ds is 6 mo and i can't see us getting to the next stage [grrr]

uwila · 01/01/2007 00:47

With DS (second child) I got a car seat and a maclaren Techno Classic (good from birth) and it worked very well. DS now 19 months and still happy with my Maclaren. Travel systems are convenient if you take the baby out in the car a lot for the first few months. But, by about 6 months, I'd rather have a nice small pram I can maneuver through Sainsbury's and get on the Tube. Depends where you live and what your life style is I suppose.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 01/01/2007 00:47

ooops i seem to think mn has my own emoticons now i meant of course!! i wasn;t sure if pramettes were slightly elevated you see. if they are as flat as a moses basket/carry cot i might get one that is umbrella style. already got a big pram but not practical for when we go shopping and i have to get it in and out the car at different places.

kiskidee · 01/01/2007 01:15

omg, uwila and i agreed on something for once! (see below)

NappiesGalore · 01/01/2007 21:40

i am a recovered pushchair buying obsessive and i would also advise against a travelk system. i think they only sell them to expectant first time parents who use them for a few months cause theyve spent so much on them, then buy seats and pushchairs which better suit their lifestyles!

would second the reccomendation for a base in the car which the car seat clicks on to. the safest around is apparently the britax cosy tot with isofix base (which you can also use conventionally with a seatbelt if you are in a diff car for some reason.) the first time you are fiddling with the seatbelt in the pouring rain, you will see what we mean!

think about weight - i always found that an issue esp when lugging it in and out of the boot of the car all the time. and how much stuff you can carry on/in/under it (seems irrelevent now, but trust me). and how easy it is to fold (if you are ever planning to use public transport alone, you will need to be able to fold one handed while holding wriggling or sleeping baby and whatever bags you may have...)

good luck, and congrats btw
