Help! I always pack too much, so help me out please

I admit it, I am a serial overpacker. I'm guilty of completely filling our cases every trip, and then cramming more in on top!

At the moment, I'm surrounded by clothes as I prepare for a month away. DD is almost 6. We'll be in America where the climate is similar to here. Over there little girls tend to be far more casual/sporty, but dd is a skirt/dresses kind of girl.

Help me get organised, and think out loud please. How many:

Socks (6 pair?)
Tights (6 pair in various colours)
Vests (also thinking 6)
Knickers (currently have 10 laid out)
Skirts (3 casual, 2 dressy)
Trousers (4 pair)
Jeans (1 pair)
Tops (10)
cardigans (2 dressy, 2 casual)
fleeces (2)
Dressy dresses (2)
Pajamas (4 pair)
shoes (trainers, dressy x2, boots, wellies, casual x3, slippers)
Heavy coats (1 parka, 1 dressier)
Hats (3)
Scarves (3)
Mittens (2)

Don't want to do laundry endlessly, but also don't want to take everything we own, and risk bursting zips on cases.....also need to leave some room for bargain price purchases thanks to the current exchange rates!

Advice from experienced packers who know how to pare down sensibly is greatly appreciated. Sorry to be so helpless/useless....

1 hat/scarf/gloves
cut the cardis/fleeces to 2
Skirts - 3 max.
Shoes - trainers, one dressy, one casual, wellies.

Cut the dressy coat out. Also have 2 pairs of pyjamas only, unless you are planning on changing them every day.

Good suggestions. I've eliminated a few skirts, tops so far. Must keep going. Don't know why I have the urge to simply take her entire wardrobe!

And, in typical Mum fashion, I haven't much thought about what I'm taking for myself....

Decide on how often you are likely to be able to/want to do laundry and take it from there...

I would think you need a lot less than 10 sets of tops/bottoms.

I personally would leave the wellies at home unles you are going to definitely hit snow and take no more than 2 pairs of shoes (one for with skirts, one for with trousers). Only one coat/hat/scarf/mittens.
Take slipper socks rather than proper slippers.

As you plan to go shopping anyway, you can always buy more if you run out!
