Where would you go in Aug with this combo?

Mil wants us all to go on holiday together. When you combine everyone's work commitments, Aug is the best month.

Bil/Sil don't have kids, usually holiday in Aug in Santorini. Suspect they would be horrified in big family resort with hundreds of school kids charging about.

We have two dc, will be 1 and 3. Greece will be far too hot in Aug. We are also resentful about paying Aug prices before we have to, and equally unenthusiastic about other people's dc!

Any miracle solutions that aren't ridiculously expensive, far too hot for a baby and a delicate balance of toddler friendly but not full of families?!

if it is you that won't like August Med temperatures, fair enough. The baby won't melt, simply keep it in the shade and perhaps consider a lunchtime siesta.

but if you don't want hot, northern Europe and possibly mountains are the way to go. Both children are too young to affect overall destination - you just need the right facilities and a box of toys for the older one, and a bit of crawling space.

villa with pool (check it is thoroughly fenced)?

but is it really necessary to do this? As you say you don't have to pay August prices yet, so why not postpone this team trip until you do?

DH is a delicate flower Grin we've got some photos from Aus where his whole face had swelled up when he got burnt in the sea. It's also not much fun trying to keep toddlers in the sun tent the whole time.

I hadn't even thought of mountains, that is a good idea, esp as IL all like walking.

Postponing is probably the most sensible idea tbh, at least then we wouldn't be huffing and puffing about the price!

hope you sort something out.

UV is a little weaker in August than June in Europe, but it is FEROCIOUS in Australia. Anyone would burn there rapidly without repeated slip slop slap wrap. And of course you'll get more exposure at altitude. Hope he's worked that out!

kids don't need to be in the sun tent, just covered and in the shade.

Villa in Portugal. We went to the algave in late August, it was high 20s so not too hot and plenty to do for all ages

dreamingofsun · 31/10/2015 13:14

somewhere in the uk for a week? pembrokeshire or ireland or brittany.

FuzzyWizard · 01/11/2015 00:00

I second Portugal. I'd go for somewhere in the more northern part of Portugal on the Atlantic rather than the Med. We were in Porto in late July... I hate hot weather and it was a nice temperature (mid 20s).

Chamonix. It's beautiful, lots of activities if people like outdoorsy stuff but the town is very easy to get around and there's pools etc for small people without it being boiling. Cool at night too so no problems with sleeping. Fresh, clean air. I agree though - why not wait until you have to pay school holiday prices before actually doing it?

Limone beside Lake Garda.

BackforGood · 01/11/2015 00:35

Does seem a bit daft though to be paying August prices if in laws don't have dc and yours are both pre-schoolers...... unless some of you are teachers / work in schools?

WiryElevator · 01/11/2015 20:52

One of the lakes. Lake Garda or perhaps Lake Constance.

Bonywasawarriorwayayix · 07/11/2015 18:20

Don't do it would be my answer. We had a family holiday last year during the school holidays due to one person's job. DS and DN were pre-school age and it proved impossible to find somewhere that suited everyone. Nobody suggested it this summer Grin

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 11/11/2015 17:47

We live overseas and holiday in the UK in August. My family lives in England and dh's lives in Scotland and we normally stay on a bit in Scotland afterwards. We have had the most amazing holidays (with clear blue skies late July / early August for the past 6 years or so) in Scotland, Fort Augustus, castles, Loch Ness, Kelpies or north of Aberdeen (salmon leaping, Dunrobin castle etc) or Oban, Taynult etc on the west coast. Tbh the cost of flights to Europe could be spent on nicer accommodation or outings at home.... Of course if you already live in Scotland, you might want to look at Wales, Ireland or England Wink

We went to Iceland in August two summers ago, Denmark this year. Both cooler, both just after Summer season so much quieter. Both culturally really child friendly. We flew Easyjet so it was cheap travel.

Accomodation in both is plentiful and ranges from houses with pools to cheaper lodges. Many houses in Iceland had hot tubs so you could sit on a cool evening (sun still out almost 24 hrs which is a little odd to adjust to) and soak.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 11/11/2015 17:57

I know you said not Greece but the Sani resort in Halkidiki would suit all of you. Other than that another vote for Lake Garda.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 11/11/2015 20:05

Oh yes, Denmark is lovely, we did a house swap in Copenhagen a few years back when the dds were small, worked really well. It was super expensive though, everything from supermarkets to coffees out....

What about the UK? Hire a cottage or even go camping the money you save you can use to entertain everyone.
